We loved the food tour. Went to restaurants we would never have known about. Our Guide, Dennis was great! We learned a lot from him about Portland’s history and the history of some of the restaurants we visited. I would definitely recommend it for anyone visiting Portland.

Hi Judy! Psyched that you had a fun and foodie time with Dennis. He's been with us for several years and even had his own culinary business for several years, so has a a variety of perspectives to share as a local, a business owner and a guide. We're grateful for your recommendation and hope you enjoyed the rest of your visit to Portland.

My wife and I took the Portland: Old Port Culinary Walking Tour. This was our first "foodie tour"...I'll try most anything once, but ultimately this tour was not all I expected it to be. Our tour began with tasting Maine potato flour donuts, served with Moxie soda. Along the way, we tasted: Maine sausages served with unique sauces; a cold-pressed nut mylk smoothie; crab sushi; lobster roll served with craft beer; ending with tasting chocolates at a chocolate store. The website describes nine possible tasting stops for this tour and, I guess, we visited six of these. Janet, our guide, was nice and informative, but, I perceived, somewhat distracted with checking her phone for "real time" updates on where our tour would be starting, where our next stop would be, what time our next stop would be expecting us, etc. Additionally, I heard her indicate that the schedule was subject to change - one of the reasons she was checking her phone. Lastly, I perceived, that for these reasons and comments indicating certain restaurants we saw were not on our tour today, our group may not have been provided the best/full experience. For these reasons, I will more thoroughly read the reviews of any "foodie" tour we may consider booking in the future. My tour cost $75 + tip, so you can judge for yourself.

Dear Dennis, We are sorry to read that you were disappointed with your tour and appreciate your candor. While our tours do vary, we typically visit six locations over three hours providing a wide variety of locally sourced foods from local owners. While you were not pleased, we usually hear and read that most of our guests are more than full and satisfied with the servings and we always strive for this. We have also spoken with Janet for her feedback and further trained her to focus exclusively on our guests. We do apologize for her distractions and your disappointment on your tour.

My husband and I booked this tour to get a flavor for the foodie scene in Portland expecting great food and fun! There were seven of us on the tour with our guide Janet. We began the tour in Maine's Pantry (a store) where we wandered for a bit until our guide got set up. Then we had a small taste of Moxie (a soda-like drink) and two donut halves (lemon and sea salt chocolate from Holy Donuts). Then onto The Thirsty Pig for sausage samples with sauces, a kickstarter Juicery where we had a 4 oz smoothie in which we were not told the specific ingredients. Walked to the Market where we had a sushi roll. Next stop Gritty's which was the best stop, 1/2 of a lobster roll and two beer tasters. Final stop a chocolate shop where we received two small pieces of chocolate. Our guide seemed disorganized and kept looking at her phone and apologizing stating the "they" kept changing the order of the tour on her. And it felt that way. I realize that not everyone has the same tastes in food but I felt that for $70/person plus tip and over a 3 hour time period the food was not substantial and the choices were pretty strange and eclectic. I honestly expected more Maine driven food. And although the guide was personable, it felt like she shared a lot but said little, if that makes sense. I honestly would spend your money elsewhere; the cost of the tour would provide a really nice dinner with drinks.

Thank you for joining us and sharing your review. We are sorry that you were disappointed and have spoken with Janet to further train her on this tour. She should have adequately shared with you that all the foods you enjoyed were Maine-centric, including the award winning donuts and chocolates made with Maine potatoes, the sausage from local farms, the fresh crabmeat and lobster from our Casco Bay, and of course our Moxie having been invented in Maine before Coca Cola in the late1800s. Your visits were exclusively to locally owned entrepreneurs to learn their stories as well, from their beginnings with food carts and kickstarters and more. We do hope you enjoyed the remainder of your visit to Maine and thank you for joining us.
