The "pink" parts of the Great Salt Lake typically refer to its saltpans and shallow bays where high concentrations of microorganisms, particularly a type of halophilic bacteria called Halobacteria, thrive. These microorganisms, which are pinkish-red in color, produce pigments that give the water and surrounding mudflats a distinct pink or reddish hue. The coloration is more prominent during the summer and early fall months when the lake's water levels are lower, and the salinity is higher due to evaporation.
