The Old Town Trolley (OTT) and Tour is the thing to do, to get a quick two-hour overview of San Diego and Coronado. If you are on a cruise, stop C is your stop to get on the OTT tour. The ticket kiosk is half a block away after you exit the cruise terminal, just ask port security for directions. The OTT is a small bus, fashioned like a vintage streetcar trolley, with padded wooden seats, open sides, and a driver/tour guide called the “conductor.” The OTT has hop-on hop-off privileges with 12 stops along its route. You can start the tour by catching the OTT at any of its stops along the route (see their web page), but the designated beginning and the end of the tour is in Old Town (Stop A), where you must get off at the end of the tour (if you did not start your tour at Stop A) and reboard another trolley to continue your tour. Our conductor was a hoot. She was funny and informative with a wealth of historical knowledge which was shared throughout the tour. The tour is scripted, so if you hop-off and hop-on, the presentation continues. The conductors add their own emphasis as they deem appropriate. Be mindful of “last pick up times” and remember the terminus is stop A in Old Town. The OTT has an unofficial policy of leaving no one stranded. So, for us we were stuck at stop A, the last stop for the day, but the conductor brought us back to stop C, to where we started our tour. There are no guarantees for this accommodation, but we were so appreciative when granted this ride back to our cruise ship. I would recommend you take a full 2 hour tour for the overview and then begin the tour again using your hop on hop off privileges to get a more in depth experience of the city. This requires being very selective if you only have a day, as a cruiser, but very leisurely if you can spread your visit over two days. A free detailed map and guidebook is provided with discount coupons and a listing of 10 free museum admissions at a number of the designated stops. As time permits, take time to make stops for brunch, lunch, dinner or plan a pub crawl with a varied menu of drinks and snacks. One of the conductor’s recommendations was The Old Town Mexican Café for lunch, which we did, and was more than happy with our experience. Try the fish tacos. The Old Town Railroad Depot museum, free with your OTT ticket purchase, is a quick fun exhibit worth your time as you stroll around Old Town.

Awesome tour! We had 3 different guide and each one was so knowledgeable and gave a great history of San Diego, well worth the money!
