As a high school teacher, I have been on this tour twice (and once for personal fun) and I can attest that Kathy is knowledgeable, attentive and always able to provide an authentic experience for anyone who wants to understand what the Castro is about. She takes her time with groups and always provides a context to whatever sites she is exploring along the way. If you want to understand the history of one of the most important neighborhoods in SF, take this tour!

4 of us met the tour leader, Kathy for a very personal, poignant and well-researched stroll around the Castro. Kathy gave us an in depth over view of the struggles that the GLBT community faced and still face these days. Definitely worth your time !

This is an amazing walking tour, covering the highs and lows of the history of LGBT people in San Francisco and the US generally. Kathy tells a very honest story that clearly shows the battle for equality is far from won. I really wish more people who don't identify as LGBT would go on tours like this in order to better understand our history. The work of Harvey Milk is well-documented thanks to the excellent film but other aspects of the Castro district are less so. It was interesting to learn about the people who live and work in the Castro, how it's changed over the years and its relationship to the rest of San Francisco. We were shown a school where a solid foundation in human rights underpins their education. We were also told about the cultural make-up of the Castro and what it means to be part of that community. These are some of the things that will stay with me. Kathy is very open and shared information about her life with us. It was interesting to hear how she came to live in the area and to be running the tour. As always, it's the personal stories that make tours like this so amazing. This was borne out in the quilts we saw that had been made by friends and relatives of those who died from AIDS-related illnesses. There are also plenty of laughs on the tour. From hankie codes, dykes on bikes to billy dolls, we shared jokes on the quirks of LGBT cultures. In fact, sharing was very much part of the tour. Kathy was as keen to learn from us as we were to hear about the history of the Castro. We had a particularly good conversation about the challenges of growing older as an LGBT person. Kathy talked about how this might be approached in her community and we shared some of the challenges currently facing older gay people in the UK. As the first openly gay generation reaches old age, it's something that hasn't really been addressed until now and shows that there is still a long way to travel on our journey towards acceptance and equality.
