Our tour guide was amazing! She gave great information about the food we ate and history of Charleston / low country cuisine.
We made 5 stops on the tour where we ate the following: (1) grits with bacon and fried green tomatoes, (2) hush puppies, crab stuffed shrimp wrapped in bacon, she crab soup, a side of rice (3) samples at a local spice shop, (4) cornbread, fried pimento cheese balls, and a BBQ slider, (5) and finished with samples of brittle, chocolate peanuts, turtles, and a free praline. This was a TON of food which is amazing. No way you walk away from this tour needing to stop for another meal anytime soon. The food was traditional low country cuisine. At the spice shop, you will get the same free samples as you would any other patron, it made sense with the theme of giving context behind the influences different cultures had on the cuisine. All restaurants were a short walk from one another around the city market.
To get to why I thought it was just average... When I have done food tours in other cities, I typically walk away wow’d with the food. This tour is more about exposing you to a high quantity of food instead of a higher quality of food. There wasn’t anything I walked away saying “I’m coming back here for this!” Nothing wrong with that, just a different experience than I was looking for. Maybe there’s another one out there that would better meet what I was looking for.

Wow! First off, many thanks for your thoughtful comments. This is a huge help to us and we will be thinking about your feedback for days to come - if not weeks. We are going back to our restaurant partners to see what, specifically, we can do to make the tour better and leave guests with that wow'd feeling, which is exactly what we aspire to. It's a balancing act - quantity versus quality, historic coverage versus modern sensibilities, etc., etc. It's all good, we're just sorry the wow'd part didn't reach critical mass in your case. We are convinced that the wow is there, we just didn't cook it down to the right reduction on your particular tour and, for that, we apologize. Best wishes for the New Year!
