I had read comments on Matt as a tour guide and hope we would get him. He is a great guide and we loved getting to see the bottom of the canyon with his spotting scope. This was our second tour of the grand canyon and really love that we don't have to worry about traffic or parking. The guides have so much fun and educational facts to share. We learn something new each time we take out of town friends with us.
The small group tour of the Grand Canyon was fantastic! We had just gone to Sedona by ourselves the day before and were frustrated by the many cars and crowds. On this trip our leader, Drew, scheduled it in such a way that we missed the crowds and saw parts that we would not have seen on our own. Even the delicious lunch was enjoyed on a secret location all by ourselves in full view of the grandeur of the canyon. On the way there and back Drew gave us a comprehensive history of not only the canyon but the area around it as well. It didn't hurt that we were taking the van on its maiden voyage.
So, there's SEEING the Grand Canyon, which I did 20 years ago. Then there's EXPERIENCING the Grand Canyon, which we did on this tour. Because just driving up and looking at it is not the same as gaining some depth of understanding about how it's vastness and how it came to be about the geology, cultures and history that have shaped it. And THAT, as they say, made all the difference. Our guide, Drew, is a geologist, Canyon hiker/camper, and passionate about the history that comes with it. He took us to several locations to get a sample of both the natural and human architecture, with stories and factoids that both humanized and amazed this natural wonder. Recommendations? 1. Ask for Drew! 2. Bring binoculars 3. Be prepared for wind and rapidly changing weather. For those less hardy? No worries: hubby took a nap in the van! No strenuous activity required. Participate as much or as little as you are comfortable. Snacks, lunch, plenty of water and soft-drinks. And for those more adventurous? Go here first to understand the unique challenges, and best strategies, available at this astonishing geologic and cultural icon. Worth your time AND your money!
