Unfortunately this was the most disappointing part of an amazing 5-day first trip to NYC. The person at check-in was great. The servers on the boat were fine. The captain was disappointing.
First, masks. Before we left the dock, the captain gave detailed information about how to move about the boat once in transit and the federal mandate regarding wearing masks when not sitting at your table, with your party, eating and/or drinking. The mask mandate was not enforced once. We were sitting near the exit to the outside and all of the groups aside from two walked back and forth between the cabin and the outside area, masks either nowhere to be seen or on but not covering the person's nose.
Second, the tour description says "light narration", which to me means that we, having never been to the area, would learn where and what a few things are. The captain said nothing - seriously, nothing- after the mask intro, until we were docked again. My group was scrambling to research online and try to figure out what landmarks we were passing. In the end, we basically paid $230 for 4 of us to see the Status of Liberty for two minutes. After the tour was over, I stopped by the check-in booth and confirmed that light narration meant what I thought it meant; she confirmed yes, that a few of the major landmarks are be pointed out/described as you pass.
If you already know all of the landmarks in the area, you might like this tour. If you are new to the area, I would suggest a cheaper tour where the captain does more than sit at the helm.
