The Gettysburg Battlefield(s) cover a huge amount of area (Wikipedia has it at nearly 4000 acres, or over 6 square miles. So, one great way to get an good sense of the lay of the land is the bus tour. The doubledecker bus is a great option, and the view from the top is really good, better than from inside. You will, however, want to take weather/temperature into account if you choose to ride on top. We made two stops, one for coffee/restroom, one at Little Round Top. Our guide was very good, providing a narrated trip. They supply plug-in earbuds, like you can get on an airline flight.

Narrated by certified guides this two-hour tour is a must-do activity. Tickets can be bought at the battlefield museum and this tour takes you through the key battlefield sites, strategy amongst the combatants as well some interesting sidebars you wouldn't get elsewhere. It also is a good preview for you to determine what sites you want to visit on your own. This gives a great overview of the battlefield, but if you think this will be all you need to do to see the field it isn't. As mentioned great overview for you to determine what you want to explore further ion your own

My mom and I did this tour last week. The bus left on time, tour was about 2 hours long, but the humor and interesting facts provided by the tour guide made the time go quickly. The tour bus was climate controlled and comfortable. There is a bathroom stop 1/2 way through the tour. Guide was informative and provided lots of facts that arenā€™t on the self guided CD tours.
