Dave, our tour guide on Wednesday, July 17 at 1:45 p.m. was first class, covered the overall battlefield scope with excellent description, pointed out relevant smaller items, answered all our questions precisely. Clearly, he understands the importance of Gettysburg to the Civil War and to U. S history.
I add only one minor point in reference to his comments on General Meade, he said that this Commanding Union General at Gettysburg, after the battle except for Fort Meade in Maryland, named after him, had faded into obscurity. My small point has to do with the Meade School in Gettysburg, named after General Meade, an elementary school until 1992, when it was closed, later recycled into an excellent hotel, Federal Pointe, where we very comfortably stayed last Wednesday night. The name Meade School remains, carved in clear, large letters into the face of the building, facing east, I believe.
