The description of the tour specifically quotes "take you on an exhilarating, up-close adventure across crystal-clear waters, winding through lush mangroves, stopping at pristine sandbars, and exploring hidden islands that are off the beaten path. "
There was no winding through lush mangroves except when we were on our short visit to a submarine cove from the cold war, the only time we really got to see the mangroves. We never stopped at a sandbar and saw only 1 hidden island if you can call it hidden! This was the worst excursion we have ever been on.
The tour through the mangroves was nixed when another boat with approx. 20 kayakers had reached the stop before we did. We therefor were not able to go into the mangroves with our motors, even at a slow speed. The backup plan seemed to be a "highspeed" run to the submarine stop, over open water, another "highspeed" run to a very posh neighbourhood on a tiny island, another "highspeed" run to the docks off Malory Square in Key West and then an "highspeed" run back to our starting point. The tour guide never really talked to us. He kept ahead of us on his jetski and stopped when anyone seemed to get too far behind. We finally had been soaked enough on our "highspeed" runs and stopped in order to wipe off our faces and glasses. I did not pay over $350 CDN just to boot across the open waters and stop for 5 minutes at 3 different stops. When we returned, we spoke to the other 4 people who were on the other 2 catamarans and their expectations were the same as ours; a gentle run through the mangroves, hopefully to see some wildlife and peacefully cruise through the area and possibly paddle our feet at a sandbar. If we had known that there was nothing "backcountry" in our backcountry tour, and if we had known we would have been taken back to Malory Square where we had just spent the previous 4 days, I would not have wasted the money.
I expect there may be a need to modify the tour, but the backup plan should be equitable with what we are missing. Instead, we were soaked to the skin, our backs and necks were impacted by the pounding as we sped across the open water, and by the end of 2 hours, we were fed up and had not enjoyed a single moment.
