2 Hours | Portland Women's History Walking Tour

Overview
Running the factories or running for office, Portland women boldly shaped our city’s culture while continually moving the country toward equal rights. Hear stories of women who achieved remarkable things, like the Indigenous Penobscot performer who reframed immigration policy, the Chinese immigrant and laundress who won American Mother of the Year, the white tavern keeper who went up against the British Navy, and the enslaved Black maid who abolished slavery statewide. Experience the charm and depth of a city that was almost lost were it not for the impact of women’s collective energy and passion.

Stories are told with heart, humor, and humanity by locally-raised and exceedingly-excited tour guide, Dugan Murphy. See museums, stately row houses, soaring churches, regal Federal-style mansions, and other landmarks on this 2-hour guided walking tour over 1.3 miles in Portland's Arts District and West End neighborhood.

What a fantastically informative and entertaining tour of downtown Portland! Our tour-guide Dugan made the role of Maine women in local, national and international history come alive. As a bonus, the tour is centered around a particularly pretty part of the city and concludes in an area with plenty of restaurants and shopping. I would recommend this tour for anyone from 8 to 108.

I love the Arts District and I love that you do too. A nice bonus that there are so many things to do in a place just busting with stories of amazing women from centuries of history. Thank you for reviewing your experience!

Dugan was a delight on our Women's History Tour for Mother's Day! He is funny and charming on his own--but to boot, he is clearly masterful of the subject matter, and weaved themes seamlessly into our tour which made it feel both illuminating to the past and relevant to the present. Two hours flew by, and we absolutely will be back for another tour. This is a great way for non-locals and locals alike to learn about Portland's rich history and re-discover the city from a fresh perspective.
