2 Hours | Portland Women's History Walking Tour

Overview
Running the factories or running for office, Portland women boldly shaped our city’s culture while continually moving the country toward equal rights. Hear stories of women who achieved remarkable things, like the Indigenous Penobscot performer who reframed immigration policy, the Chinese immigrant and laundress who won American Mother of the Year, the white tavern keeper who went up against the British Navy, and the enslaved Black maid who abolished slavery statewide. Experience the charm and depth of a city that was almost lost were it not for the impact of women’s collective energy and passion.

Stories are told with heart, humor, and humanity by locally-raised and exceedingly-excited tour guide, Dugan Murphy. See museums, stately row houses, soaring churches, regal Federal-style mansions, and other landmarks on this 2-hour guided walking tour over 1.3 miles in Portland's Arts District and West End neighborhood.

Dugan was an excellent tour guide! He was supremely prepared and knowledgeable about the subject. He had laminated photos of the people in the stories he shared, which really helped to bring the history to light. Further, he was able to weave a seamless story that brought many of the historical subjects into focus at more than one point in the tour, making the history more accessible and interesting. He is clearly passionate about Portland history; I would recommend him without hesitation. The two hours literally flew by. The other benefit is that it is all outdoors, so any concerns about close contact is moot. I'm looking forward to attending his other two tours and bringing friends.

Many guests enjoy viewing historic images on the tour, so I've got a bundle of them to go with the Black History Tour and Hidden Histories Tour as well. I'm so happy you had a great time and I look forward to guiding you through another part of town in the future. Thank you for writing your review!

Walking around the city and looking at the buildings is one thing, right? But hearing stories along the way about those buildings and the people associated with them makes for a much more meaningful experience. I'm glad you enjoyed it! Thank you for reviewing.

This was a wonderful experience! The tour guide, Dugan, is thoroughly prepared, his information is impeccably researched, and he is passionate about his subject. His presentation is warm, accessible and entertaining while also being highly educational. I will take other tours with him.

I'm so excited to be able to bring stories of important women out of the archives and to share them in the very places where they are most relevant. I look forward to seeing you on the Black History Tour or the Hidden Histories Tour!
