2 Hours | Portland Women's History Walking Tour

Overview
Running the factories or running for office, Portland women boldly shaped our city’s culture while continually moving the country toward equal rights. Hear stories of women who achieved remarkable things, like the Indigenous Penobscot performer who reframed immigration policy, the Chinese immigrant and laundress who won American Mother of the Year, the white tavern keeper who went up against the British Navy, and the enslaved Black maid who abolished slavery statewide. Experience the charm and depth of a city that was almost lost were it not for the impact of women’s collective energy and passion.

Stories are told with heart, humor, and humanity by locally-raised and exceedingly-excited tour guide, Dugan Murphy. See museums, stately row houses, soaring churches, regal Federal-style mansions, and other landmarks on this 2-hour guided walking tour over 1.3 miles in Portland's Arts District and West End neighborhood.

Engaging, fun, and thought-provoking. Our tour guide, Dugan, was easy to talk to and happy to answer questions. Walking around town after the tour, I found myself observing the streets of Portland in a new way. Dugan's storytelling made the city's history feel so connected to our lives today. When their was a chance of rain for our tour, I really appreciated how Dugan communicated about the changing forecast!

Weather in New England can change quickly! I'm glad you were prepared, even though we ended up with downside spring conditions. Rain gear is helpful and comfy shoes are always recommended.

My wife and I took the Women’s History Walking tour today, and wow what an amazing tour! The tour explored Portland’s arts district through to its West End, one of our favorite places in Portland. I was shocked by how much there was to cover and how many women pioneers I’ve never heard of. From the country’s first lesbian novelist to “Lady Edison” holder of dozens of patents, Portland was full of landmarks, places and people that made fascinating contributions to both the Women’s rights movements and the shaping of Portland and Maine. Brought to life with humor, care and wit, Dugan was a brilliant tour guide. His expertise was also clear and he deftly answered all of the many questions that came up throughout the tour. A great addition to any visit to Portland!

I love that the Arts District and West End are beautiful enough, one could have a great time just looking at the buildings. But then to learn about all the amazing women behind these landmarks! I'm so happy to be able to share their stories with you.

Wonderful, informative tour led by a passionate and engaging guide. We brought our two year old on this tour and the route was stroller-accessible and included several stops where our toddler was able safely get out to stretch his legs. Highly recommended for adults and families alike.

I do make sure that tour routes are fully accessible to strollers and wheelchairs when guests are using them. I'm glad your kiddo had a good time!
