A Drive Through Time: A Ranching History of Point Reyes National Seashore

Overview
Enjoy this self-guided audio tour on your drive to the Point Reyes Lighthouse!

This is the story of the magnificent Point Reyes National Seashore and its odd relationship with the dairy and beef ranches. “Cows in a park?” you might ask? Well, yes. They were here long before the park was formed and are a vital part of present-day Point Reyes. The tour takes you from Point Reyes National Seashore headquarters to the lighthouse through beautiful natural and pastoral landscapes.

Please Note:
If you want to visit the lighthouse itself at the end of the drive, please note that it is closed on certain days of the week. Also, due to its popularity in the winter months, traffic to the lighthouse is sometimes diverted to Drake’s Beach on the weekends where you can hop a shuttle over to the lighthouse. In either case, this tour will take you to the end of your drive. You can check with the rangers or online about the lighthouse schedule.

As a Bay Area resident, I have visited Point Reyes many times because of its natural beauty, What I knew little about was the history of farming and ranching there, and why they are still so important to this unique and precious spot. The tour guides were clear and engaging, and the history didn't feel like homework (in other words, this would be great for school-age kids). The voices of ranchers telling how people lived in the old days brought the landscape to life. If you're a foodie, don't miss the description of "Shafter Butter."

I love knowing the history of a place when I'm touring. This well designed audio tour provided us with a "living history museum" experience. We heard interesting stories from a variety of voices and drove away with a much richer experience of the area than we would have otherwise.

Cool. Who knew? Cows in the park! Wonderful to hear first hand stories about this incredible place. Having a personal tour guide on my phone, made everything come alive.
