A Walking Tour of Frederick, Maryland - The Crossroads of Maryland

Overview
I’m Don Burgess, a Frederick resident interested in sharing my passion for heritage tourism and historic preservation as they contribute to preserving and creating a city’s “Sense of Place.”

I’ve been a history buff of this region for years, and my role on Facebook as Frederick Tour enables me to combine my love of things old with my skills with things new. I’m a semi-professional photographer who has photographed, shown, and sold images of Frederick, Harpers Ferry, and other regions.

See more details about tour in itinerary below and at fredericktour.org

We can give tours year round. If it is raining/snowing (light) and you still want to take the tour, we can do that. If it is raining/snowing (hard), we can do a virtual "tour" indoors (groups of 8 or less).

Upon request, we can offer theme tours such as churches, architecture, or Civil War, or even photo shoots.

What To Expect
1
Winchester Hall
Winchester Hall / Frederick Female Seminary / Women's College of Frederick. At this stop, we first provide an overview of Frederick from its founding in 1745 to the Civil War to the present day in order to provide context for all of the stops. See a 180 year old girls school that went through several closures, but still exists today as an important part of our heritage.
2
Historical Society of Frederick County
Loats Female Orphan Asylum / Protestant Episcopal Orphan Home. This is a short stop about two orphanages operated for 75-100 years by the Lutheran and Episcopal churches. Although long gone, their legacies live on with foundations providing college scholarships for needy youth.
3
Evangelical Lutheran Church
We will learn about the oldest congregation (almost 300 years) responsible for founding Frederick, see the iconic Twin Spires, and see a photo of the sanctuary with some great German engineering during the Civil War.
4
Carroll Creek Linear Park
Walk up and down Carroll Creek and see the sights
5
Baker Park
A great resource for the City of Frederick

This was a wonderful walking tour that would be great for anyone who has an inkling of interest in the history of Frederick.!The tour guide, Don-is a genuinely friendly guy whose knowledge of Frederick can only be achieved by living there! His delivery of information is animated and unique. Even though I’m very familiar with Frederick, I learned a great deal. It was a quick 1.5 hours and an easy walking route! I recommend it to both locals as well as out-of-towners!

I'm a lifelong resident of Frederick and have always loved living here. I've followed "Frederick Tour" on Facebook for several years and have always enjoyed the photographs that Don posts. When I found out he was doing historical walking tours, I knew I had to go. I was very surprised by all of the history that I didn't know about my hometown. Don's tour was very informative and would appeal to all age groups. He makes learning history fun!!

I recently took this 2+ hour walking tour and highly recommend it to both local residents and Frederick visitors. The tour guide offered a comprehensive overview of the City's history from its founding in the mid-1700's to present day. He offered detailed explanation of the City's climate during various historical phases (colonial, Revolutionary War, Civil War, etc.), complimented by photos and references to a wide variety of historical venues located in the historic district. His extensive knowledge was evident in his responses to requests for additional details. I highly recommend this tour to everyone interested in the rich history of this fascinating City!
