What To Expect

La Brea Tar Pits and Museum

Use your general admission ticket for entry to the La Brea Tar Pits and Museum. Here, Ice Age fossils are being excavated right in the middle of L.A. Enjoy this truly unique attraction by experiencing all that it has to offer. Marvel at its outdoor Lake Pit, oozing with bubbling tar; travel back in time among the prehistoric plants of its Pleistocene Garden; and explore its active dig sites, where it seems excavators uncover something new daily. The museum itself features its own wealth of offerings. Scope out the fossils of prehistoric mammoths, saber-toothed cats, wolves, and ground sloths, or take an opportunity to watch paleontologists working in the Fossil Lab on their most recent finds. For a wonderful overview, reserve a spot on the Excavator Tour, free with admission. This guided tour delves into the history of the tar pits and explains just how so many massive creatures ended up stuck here. You’ll also visit the Fossil Lab, Observation Pit and Project 23, where excavators are continuously helping to unlock the mysteries of prehistoric L.A.

Great place to take the family. You can explore the outdoor tar pits for free. First museum that I've been to that encourages you to touch a lot of the exhibits.

Started with a very nice admission attendant. Great timeline explanations and how the tar pits evolved. Wonderful exhibits indoors and fascinating information on the displays. Throughly enjoyed our visit. Well worth the price of admission. The other guest were very respectful of mask mandates.

The tar pits area is part of a public park. They have a number of “pits” that are fenced off, and a couple of areas that are oozing (marked by cones) in the grassy areas. We paid admission (ask for a Veteran discount if appropriate), and included the 3D movie - it was interesting. There are a number of tar stained fossils displayed throughout the museum, and an area (lab) where they continue to recover fossils from material excavated on site. We thought the museum experience was worth the price of admission. I found it interesting to watch the methane gas bubbling through the tar, so if you are pressed for time, just walking through the park is a nice adventure. The museum parking lot ($15) was full when we got there, but we scored an on street spot (lots less expensive) in proximity to a park entrance.
