Tongass National Forest
Explore the mysterious waters surrounding the Tongass National Forest as we search for wildlife aboard a rugged Zodiac expedition craft. With an experienced captain and expert naturalist as your guide, you will encounter the vibrant ecosystem of Southeast Alaska which is home to a variety of wildlife including Salmon, Harbor Seals, Dallā€™s Porpoise, Bears, Bald Eagles, Steller Sea Lions, Killer Whales (Orca), and Humpback Whales. While we canā€™t guarantee any specific wildlife encounters, we believe that with the experience of our crew, and the quiet unobtrusive vessels we have selected as exploration platforms, there is a good chance of experiencing something truly magnificent. Beyond the possibility of wildlife, viewing the breathtaking wilderness of SE Alaska from an open Zodiac is a unique way to explore the area. Let's go out to sea!

Crew was nice, Boat was small! Felt a little risky. Only saw a few seals and eagles. Wouldnā€™t do it againā€¦

Thank you for your review, weā€™re sorry to hear the experience did not meet your expectations. Our Zodiac Milpro HD vessels are some of the toughest, most sea worthy craft on the planet, and are used by scientists, explorers, and high end expedition cruise lines all over the world, including Antarctica. They are small, and that is why we use them. They allow us to get close to shore and really explore amongst the islands, rocky beaches, and passageways. The open Zodiacs allow our guests to experience nature with all their senses, without the barriers of fogging windows. Our guests are able to ask questions and converse one on one with our knowledgeable crew, not just listen to them over a PA system. Ā  You mention that you only saw eagles and seals. You likely also saw marbled murrelets, harlequin ducks, common murres, several species of gulls, cormorants or other seabirds. You saw rocky islands topped with emerald trees, rugged shorelines, black sandy beaches, forests of kelp, and colorful sea stars clinging to steep intertidal walls. You likely felt the ocean breeze on your face and tasted the salt of sea spray. Maybe it rained that day and you got to smell the freshness of rainforest and ocean at once.Ā  Ā  I am guessing what you didnā€™t see, and why you were disappointed, was a whale. I understand. Humpback whales are magnificent creatures. We see them on about 80 percent of our tours, and of course when we do, we stop to watch for a bit, but whale watching is not our entire focus. There are about a hundred whale watching companies is Alaska. Most operate bigger vessels. We wanted to do something different. I hope that eventually you can look back on the journey you took with us, remember the sights, sounds, and how it felt to be out in the Alaska wilderness, and that you got to experience a beautiful place. We wish you well in your future travels.

Very fun tour! We saw a great sized pod of humpback whales! We watched them come up and feed multiple times. The guides we had, Carly and Kelly, were great company, they catered to our wishes to see whales verses the typical scenery. They taught us many interesting facts about the local wildlife. We had hot chocolate and snacks out on the water! Amazing time! Take this tour!!!

We appreciate the review, and weā€™re happy to hear your family had a good time with our crew! Itā€™s always nice when our guests have flexibility in their schedule so we can explore a bit further/longer. We hope to see you again on a future trip!

We took this tour as part of our southbound Alaksa Cruise. For years we took the crowded cruise company sponsored tours. It is definitely time to switch to the smaller more personal tours that are available. Kelly was our captain and coincidently not the first time she was captain of the boat that we were out on tur with. She was also our captain for a pelagic tour we took in March in Hawaii. We would definitely recommend that anyone interested in a great, enjoyable, and perfect opportunity to observe wildlife to take this tour.

Thank you for sharing those amazing photos, and writing a review! Weā€™re glad you enjoyed the smaller group experience. What a fun coincidence that you went out on another tour with Captain Kellie, itā€™s a small world indeed. We hope to have you out again if you come through Ketchikan in the future!
