Overview

Departing from downtown Anchorage, the Coastal Classic Train travels south along the rugged coastline of Turnagain Arm, with dramatic views of the Chugach Mountains plunging directly to the sea. At the end of Turnagain Arm, the tracks veer away from the road system into the backcountry wilderness – and what many consider to be the most scenic stretch of the Alaska Railroad, accessible only by train. Watch for views of massive glaciers, steep river canyons, and cascading waterfalls. The train arrives to Seward at 1115 am, allowing plenty of time to explore this charming port town – or opt to take a marine wildlife & glacier day cruise into the nearby Kenai Fjords – before departing on the return journey at 6 pm that evening, arriving back to Anchorage by 10:15 pm.

It's a bit pricey, but if you're looking for a train ride with top-notch scenery, vintage rolling stock, accommodating service personnel, and a sense of history hop on board (just be sure to make reservations well in advance!). We've ridden many trains in various locations - this is the best for scenery anywhere. Seward is a fun destination and a jumping off spot for further adventure such as Kenai Fjords. Don't miss this train and don't book it to save time or money...the journey is a destination in itself!

Roundtrip to Seward from Anchorage was the ideal way to travel for our day cruise! The crew did a tremendous job of ensuring our safety and satisfaction were met. Throughout the journey, they'd slow down allowing us to catch a glimpse of the animals or point out key landscape. In addition, the staff was always friendly and courteous. Conductor Warren made our entire trip. He was a delight to see walking the aisles and would often stop and talk to our family. We'll definitely be back!!
