Very disappointed in what was sold to us as being Gold Star service. We booked thru Princess Lodges and despite many attempts at resolution they must not have customer service. We arrived at the Denali train station at 3:15 pm, for our 4:00 pm departure to find that there were no boarding passes for us. Fortunately we had our paperwork with us to prove that we had a paid reservation with assigned seats in Rail Car 654 "Goldstar" with assigned seats 03c and 03d. After approximately 90 minutes and several trips back and forth to the rail office we were finally able to obtain a boarding pass with no assigned seat. It turned out to be fortunate that the 4 pm train did not arrive on time or it would have left without us since it took so long to receive boarding passes. There were a group of four others that experienced these same issues.
When the train arrived, approximately 90 minutes late, the workers on the train informed us that our assigned seats had been given to someone else. They were able to find seating for us in the last seats of the "B" car. They also let us know that they were short staffed with one bartender for two cars and not enough dining staff.
The train left and when the bartender came around to take drink orders, I ordered a Margarita. It turned out that there was only enough tequila for one drink and another guest changed their order so that I could have it. A while after that I was brought a plastic cup of tequila only. When I asked what that was, I was told there was no margarita mix and this was all they had. I declined and had no drinks of the two that were supposed to be included in Goldstar service. My friend did have one Bloody Mary.
Only a very short portion of the beginning of the trip was narrated until the guide and bartender left to help in the dining car. I would like to comment that all of the staff on the train did work very hard to overcome the extensive difficulties. They also made extensive apologies for the lack of service.
We sat, hungering for dinner, while many other guests passed us to descend to the dining car. Finally, shortly after 8 pm, we left to go downstairs. We already knew that they were out of many of the dining choices including all desert. We both ordered cod and were told that we could not have a salad with it. The meal was finally served to us at 8:38 pm. I have a photo of the portion size which seemed to be decreased based on running out of cod and that we were the last people on the train to be served dinner!
