What To Expect
1
Chinatown
Begin your day with your local expert near Chinatown for an incredible stroll through this eclectic, historic neighborhood. Instead of sensationalizing the past (true history is sensational enough) your expert guide will lead you through the rise of the Gold Rush with its brothels and opium dens but also bring you to sites like a local pharmacy to see how Chinese medicine is still prominent. Along the way, they will point out the strictly local spots and dive deep into the past.
2
Grant Avenue
As you begin your journey into the heart of the neighborhood, learn of the flood of immigration in the mid-19th century (and why!), the thriving businesses that post up on these streets, and all the vice that followed.
3
Dragon's Gate
Visit this traditional "Paifang" style entrance flocked by two Imperial guardian lions (shishi) protects the southern entrance into a land where wonder greets history. It is here your guide will set the stage - quickly dissecting the symbolism within its concrete.
4
Old Cathedral of St. Mary
As you visit sites of significance such as Old St. Mary's Cathedral and Square, your local guide will divulge the sometimes "too incredible to believe" stories and factual history paving the way for Chinatown's significance not only in San Francisco but the story of the United States.
5
Chinatown Alleys
Weave your way through small thoroughfares covered in old brick with ornate Chinese elements including the daily goings of the local people.
6
Golden Gate Fortune Cookies Co
Cap your time with a visit to the famed Golden Gate Fortune Cookie Factory where warm treats await you! See these handmade cookies come off the oven and take home a custom treat just for you!
7
North Beach
Wander into North Beach, San Francisco's Little Italy. Hear tales of Beat Poets and the Italian immigrants who settled along the shores of San Francisco Bay.
8
City Lights Booksellers
Hear the story of City Lights Booksellers - who published Allen Ginsberg's "Howl" and forever influenced the 1st Amendment in the US.
9
Lombard Street
View the crooked section of the twisting Lombard Street from a vantage point over the rolling hills.
10
Alcatraz Island
After lunch on your own in your choice of "foodie" neighborhoods, reconvene with your guide at an easy-to-locate meeting point directly across the street from Alcatraz Landing. Your guide will begin by sharing the best ways to experience the island - what to expect, secret spaces to check out, and how to plan your day. Then, after your fill of wandering the small island and taking the (excellent!) audio guide tour of the Cellhouse, return at your leisure to find a great spot to eat lunch based on the recommendations of your guide.

We enjoyed this tour especially the commentary on Alcatraz by the guards & innmates. Loved the cable car ride.

Thank you for visiting San Francisco with us! Alcatraz is such a lovely place to venture to on any visit to the city and we are happy you got to experience it. The cable car is such a San Francisco thing! We hope the wait in line wasn't too bad and you utilized our secret to getting on one without the lines!

Tour was excellent! Met the tour guide (Leanne I believe her name was) outside of the ferry to Alcatraz. She got me and my wife our tickets, broke down the rest of the day, and provided a lot of valuable tips about the best and worst places in SF to eat/check out. Alcatraz itself is a fantastic tour. We came back from Alcatraz at our own time, took a cable car(a must in SF, even if only for a few stops) to Chinatown. There we met Leanne again(sometimes I believe they mix tour guides but today we were lucky to get her again). The tour lasted about half an hour or so. She was so informative and made it a blast. I would absolutely recommend this company based on this tour.

What a lovely review for us and LeAnne! We love that you did it the "right" way and took her tips - she's a pro at experiencing San Francisco and full of a love for her city. Thanks again for taking the time to write this review. Come back soon!

Tried to pick up tickets the day before since it was an early boat ride and were told no even though the tickets had been printed. We scheduled for a 9:00 tour and was moved to 10:00. So we were not able to do the china town tour and none of your team knew anything about the China town tour, or how to get the tickets or where to meet.

Hello Storyteller4072, Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with us. We are so sorry to hear about the confusion that took place on the day of your tour! We always do our best to make sure our guests have positive experiences with us that are stress-free and easy to navigate. This is why we provide all of our guests with detailed instructions in their confirmation emails after they book. As noted on our site and the confirmation email you would have received upon booking, the tour begins at 9 am, but there is a 30- minute intro to Alcatraz before boarding the ferry. The tickets to board the ferry for Alcatraz are always at 10 am, but we get together at 9 am to confirm everyone’s bookings, walk to the ferry, and begin the intro with the guide. All of the tickets required for our tours are safe in the hands of our guides, and need not be redeemed or picked-up ahead of time, as noted on our website and in that email confirmation. Regarding the Chinatown portion of your tour, we are genuinely sorry to hear that you were unable to participate due to the confusion you experienced on the ground. The meeting time and location for this leg of the tour were in that same confirmation, however, our guide on the ground should have been more helpful with reminding you where to go. Again, we appreciate you taking the time to share your experience with us. We are always striving to improve our services and will consider your feedback moving forward. All the best, The Walks Team
