What To Expect

Alcatraz Island

Once you take the ferry over to Alcatraz Island and you are dropped off, you will make your way up to the main prison building, where you receive an audio headset, and the audio tour will guide you through the Alcatraz Prison. Once the audio tour is over, you can continue taking pictures and exploring the Island, or you can walk back down to the ferry landing and hop on the next ferry headed back to San Francisco. The Alcatraz tour typically takes 2-3 hours to enjoy.

During a short stay in San Francisco, we decided to visit the Alcatraz Penitentiary which is accessed by ferry, in about twenty minutes, at a cost of about forty dollars. Interesting are the reception facilities at sea level and those now abandoned and in ruins that housed the recreation room of the surveillance workers and their families. Much more interesting and exciting is the visit of the fortress, above, with the help of guides in your language and headphones to follow in detail the visit of the cells (first reception, rigor for the agitated, and ordinary ones, not excluding the one that was used by a prisoner who tried and perhaps succeeded in the enterprise of escaping from prison, immortalized by a famous Hollywood film), the kitchens (very dangerous for the riots that could take place there, with the help of knives and administration offices. At the end of the visit, we were able to meet an ex-convict (already imprisoned for masterfully forging notes and checks at that time) who offered the public the story of his life in prison in a book offered for sale. Thrills and thrills assured at the entrance and exit!

Based on the description of the package, we understood that you would first meet at the meeting point (post street) before leaving for the port. But the meeting place (post street) was rather about getting instructions for the activity and getting the tickets. Then you go straight to the harbor to take the boat trip. The instructions we received were clear, but we experienced the staff as slightly stressed. Overall everything went well, can recommend to go with them again
