This small island was once a fort, a military prison, and a maximum security federal penitentiary. Alcatraz Island is the site of the abandoned federal prison, the oldest operating lighthouse on the West Coast of the United States, early military fortifications, and natural features such as rock pools and a seabird colony (mostly western gulls, cormorants, and egrets). It measures 1,675 feet (511 m) by 590 feet (180 m) and is 135 feet (41 m) at highest point during mean tide.[5] The total area of the island is reported to be 22 acres (8.9 ha).[1] Landmarks on the island include the Main Cellhouse, Dining Hall, Lighthouse, the ruins of the Warden's House and Social Hall, Parade Grounds, Building 64, Water Tower, New Industries Building, Model Industries Building, and the Recreation Yard. The boat back to the city depart every 30 minutes.

The guide talked about how much all the houses were worth to much. I don’t care about the price just talk about the history, which he did but just to much about the $

Randy was very informative & interesting. He shared a wealth of knowledge with us & took the time to show a few extra sights. We had a small number in our group & it was perfect!

The ferry crew does a great job of bringing you over and back quickly. You can grab a coffee or snack, which is not offered on the island itself. Due to the audio tour approach on Alcatraz, you befittingly feel like you’re doing something very touristy. It would have been nice or more fun to have a human tour guide. However the audio recording does provide some interesting stuff unless you want a timeline or facts about the island or prison itself. Those details are not a part of the audio tour, which is mostly a collection of some personal experiences by former inmates. The island itself is a bit run down. The west side stinks like poop. The east side is covered in bird droppings. But I guess this run-down theme goes along with the entire San Fransisco vibe…. A once great beacon of excellence that has since been abandoned by previous users, now left to the non-contributing vagrants to defecate upon. In effect, San Fran and Alcatraz share a sad, creepy, has-been atmosphere.
