My wife and I took a Bitter Minnesota tour recently, and had a blast.
Our Sunday afternoon tour took us to three minneapolis taprooms; Northgate, Boom Island, and Fulton. We were already familiar with the beers of these fine breweries, but somehow hadn't made it to their actual taprooms until now, and were both glad that this was our introduction to them.
After taking off from the grumpy's parking lot downtown, our group (which otherwise included some fellas on a bachelor party-great idea btw) was treated to informative but not overbearing discussions about each brewery we were to visit courtesy of our driver, Eric (one of the most laid-back guys you're likely to meet.) We got to hear a little bit about how each brewery started up, what styles of beer to expect there, and most crucially Eric's personal recommendations and the names of the folks from each brewery so we knew who to harass with questions.
All of the bartenders we met were wonderfully accommodating and eager to discuss their brews with us. Boom island was a particularly great stop where our friendly server offered us a full flight to get a sense of their Belgian styled menu while explaining how the process of making those styles differs from other types of beer brewing.
After the tour we wound up meeting with the other riders (and our now off duty driver) at fair state for one last round.
I would highly recommend this tour for anyone who wants to check out some minnesota breweries. I doubt there's a better, more fun, or more informative way of getting acquainted with three great taprooms in the span of one day.
