We were looking forward to going to the Arctic Circle. We were picked up in a 9 passenger van, with 9 people in it, so with jackets, purses, water bottles, it was packed. The driver didn't ask our names, so I had to confirm his name. He didn't speak at all until we approached the first stop at the pipeline. We were unsure if the van was the final vehicle, or he was picking us up to take us to the final vehicle. He mumbled, so no one could hear him, and when asked to speak up, he said his PA was not working.
Seems like the driver did not want to be there at all. At the one stop for gas, we were told there would not be another rest room for 140 miles. Would have been good to know that prior to booking the tour.
At one point, to try to get some dialogue going with the driver, I asked what kind of wildlife we might see. His response was "whatever you see out the window".
About 90 minutes outside of Fairbanks, he pulled over, got out and made a cell phone call. We were all confused, as he didn't give us any indication of what it was all about.
Finally, he came back and told us the van wasn't "running right", and he called the manager, who would be there in about an hour with a new van. She showed up 2 hours later, and all the passengers decided to go back to Fairbanks. We were refunded the entire amount, but that was our one chance to visit the arctic circle, so that dampened our trip.
For a 14 hour trip, the van would have been jammed, with no room to move around. I'd suggest maintaining the vehicles better, and hiring tour guides who actually guide a tour, not just drive the van.
