Belle Meade "Journey to Jubilee" Guided History Tour

Overview
Embark on a 1-hour journey into Belle Meade with its Journey to Jubilee historic tour. Join us as we take an honest look at the lives and stories of the African Americans who were enslaved, and later employed, at Belle Meade with intentional respect and empathy. Our Journey to Jubilee tour is intended to honor the legacy and sacrifices of the individuals held in legal bondage on this property from 1807 until emancipation in 1865, as well as to explore the complexities of their new freedom in the post-Civil War years. Using a unique approach that includes reading aloud from primary sources, and engaging dialogue with the audience, this experience creates a forum for exploring the history of slavery in a new way. Enjoy a complimentary Wine Tasting after your tour and access to the Grounds for a self-guided tour.

Please Note: This tour is guided, but it does not include access to the main Mansion portion of the estate. Please book your Guided Mansion Tours separately.

Belle Meade Plantation has different tours and I'm so glad I found this one (Journey to Jubilee). This tour, led by a researcher/academic, Bridget, was extremely moving and emotional as well as very informational. If you don't have a lot of time and can only choose one tour, I highly recommend this one.

We had heard about the Belle Meade plantation tour from friends of ours in Nashville who had done the wine pairing and the historic mansion tour, but I given our interest in the civil war and post-civil war era, we opted for this tour and were blown away with the knowledge of our tour guide, the quality of the tour and the information we learned. This tour has (shockingly) has only been available since this year, but it gives a nuanced, powerful narrative of the story of slavery at the plantation and the lives of the enslaved on it. We found aspects of the plantation itself troubling with regards to the way the markers phrased the "feats" of the confederacy, but this tour did a fantastic job of framing the "lost cause" ideology and showing how it impacts how the way in which the history of plantations, the civil war , and post-civil war TN is examined and shown to tourists. Very powerful, would recommend.
