Two things to note: One, I too looked askance at the rating to wonder how it could be so positive. Two, the recommendation to book ahead is valid. Our date was filled when we arrived, so if we did not have reservations we would not have been able to hook up with a trip. Our guide, Nathan, was very experienced and despite having a wealth of time on rivers around the country of varying length and degree (1-5), he seemed perfectly at ease taking our family on the lesser (1-3) trip than some of his less experienced guides. The Bighorn Sheep trip is mostly tame, so the calm time was filled very amiably with his stories and knowledge of rafting and the area. However, there was just enough whitewater to give my pre-teen granddaughter a thrill and toss my wife overboard (Nathan got her back in the raft quickly and safely). Canon City is 45 minutes from the Springs, then you ride on a bus to put in, raft for about 60-90 minutes, ride back on the bus, then drive back to the Springs - so it is half a day at least. You can take longer and more adventurous trips, but this fit us as newcomers perfectly. We were able to have a raft to ourselves, with two guides, and another family occupied a second raft, so that was nice not to split us up. I had thought about taking my phone/camera, but there really wasn't a place to make sure it would stay dry. If I had planned ahead and used a sandwich bag or similar it probably would have worked.

Very impressed with our experience! Our guide was fantastic and very knowledgeable! He did a great job helping everyone from my 9 year old to my 70 year old parents! My 15 and 19 year olds had a blast and want to return!

We came from Oklahoma for the 3rd time this year to show our kids some of the summer activities Colorado has to offer. I am very meticulous when it comes to researching businesses and getting the most for our hard earned (self employed) money. Lost paddle is the smallest rafting guide outfit on the river and locally owned and operated by honest, hard working people. I have some physical limitations (RA and Lupus) and our younger son is 11 and was quite anxious (as I was) especially after I watched some YouTube videos of rafting! 😯🤣 I spoke on the phone and also chatted via Facebook messenger with a guide and was put at ease, as they said they'd work with us and could actually "put in" (start) wherever along the river we were comfortable with. Earlier in the season the water was so high, there were VERY dangerous sections of the river- and still are. Our son just turned 11 on this trip and one of the "big" companies was willing to take him when everyone else demanded he be at least 14, some 16! That was a red flag to me that the bottom $ line is THEIR priority. Our Lost Paddle guide, Adam, took his time explaining everything and with his expert help, our family of 4 was able to navigate really well through the Buckhorn section in the afternoon in late July. It was exciting enough for me and the 11 year old and everyone had so much fun working together!! My thrill seeking husband and 15 year old son were ready to do the more strenuous and exciting Gorge right away after they built the confidence in Buckhorn. Our ONLY regret is that we didn't schedule them 2 for the full day through the Gorge too! So. Much. FUN! Even small children and moderately active older adults should have no problem this time of year with a great guide like Adam! A few side notes I will add-- definitely bring a water bottle with a caribener to attach to your PFD (life jacket.) Wear water shoes or something like Chaco's or Teva's, use PLENTY of sunscreen especially on your hands and face. I also wore a long sleeved swim shirt- swimsuits or shorts that dry quickly are great and unless it's super cold I feel like the wetsuit option is overkill. Also, get one of those sunglasses strings, lol. Anything else (phone, etc) you won't have anywhere to put at all, so you can leave it in the car. They'll let you store your keys in the office. I will add that I LOVE to, and will continue to, support local business like Lost Paddle and can't WAIT to return next season!!! They (and Adam) made the experience personal, affordable and fun! Even their souvenirs are awesome looking and are of excellent quality and VERY fair prices. ($20 for hat or t-shirt!) Spend the extra $5 and schedule with Lost Paddle! You won't be disappointed.
