Where to begin? The initial internet research looked amazing and a phone call to customer service was super informative, friendly, and answered all questions. The drive over from Colorado Springs was beautiful and easy. Once we got there, things were seamless and instructions were crystal clear. The grounds are great with cozy hammocks, swing chairs, tables at the grill, and the zip line and rafting shops to look for swag. We made this trip with another dad and our 11-year-old daughters. We started the day with the Bighorn Sheep Canyon Whitewater rafting tour, and we provided all the equipment, including wetsuits, helmets, lifejackets, and water boots. All sizes were available, and even though it was relatively cold after a fresh set of storms, everything fit and we were warm and cozy. Instructors were hilarious, and the bus ride was highly entertaining as we read about all of the people that had adventures that wrote about it on the interior of the bus. Instructor, Emma, was a local and the absolute best. She was an expert at the rapids, a great storyteller, and made us feel at home. She was kind, caring, and our daughters absolutely loved her. She gave our girls full autonomy and was a wonderful instructor. We were past our first rapid when both of our daughters said they were ready for the Royal Gorge class 4 to 6 Rapids!
Lunch afterwards was OK but not great. Because we had a package, we had a ticket that allowed us to have a basic meal that was limited to just a couple of options. The grill is fantastic and I wish in hindsight we had the option of the full menu as the limited pickings were a little bit salty and not as great.
Afterward, we did the extreme zip line. Thankfully, the girls passed the 75 pound threshold so we were able to do the 11 line one and it was absolutely amazing. Zack and Mario were best instructors and they were freaking hilarious. They were personable, very talented, and looked like acrobats on the zip line. They gave us confidence, and we had the upmost trust them. They accommodated our every need, when it came down to water, GoPro, pictures, snacks, brakes, and doing silly things. They shared awesome stories about the wildlife and crazy things that had happened to them and while we weren’t one of the unlucky people that got rescued because they ran in front of a bear and sacrificed themselves for us, I bet they would do it in a heartbeat!
I would strongly recommend bringing a GoPro and making sure you’ve got the helmet attachment as well as the adhesive thing to clip into the helmet. If you wanna get some first person footage of the zip lines and your white water rafting.
The area around the base camp is fantastic. A lot of wonderful stores, rock and gym areas, cool gas station/local outpost type things, and the Royal Gorge very nearby. Hiking along old Canyon City and the ridge is awesome and you really can make a full day out of it coming from Colorado Springs.
I can’t wait to be back and I’m really excited to do the Royal Gorge Rapids next time and enjoy this amazing spot afterwards. Heck, I think our girls have already decided that they’re gonna work here when they grow up in their summers!
