Overview

On this three hour WALKING & DRIVING tour, you’ll travel around Birmingham to learn about the struggle for equal rights from the end of the Civil War up through the Civil Rights movement. Your tour will begin at the statue of Reverend Fred Shuttlesworth, the leader of the local movement Civil Rights struggle. We’ll discuss why the Civil Rights movement was needed and what led to segregation's fall. As you visit the major churches, parks and houses, you'll learn about a few groups who fought for Civil Rights in Birmingham and who fought against it.

We will walk over a mile on the tour in temperatures anywhere between 40-100F. Guests must be able to walk unassisted at a reasonable speed.

Learn about the role the church played in the Civil Rights movement in Birmingham and the history of the church bombing that tragically killed four little girls.

Clay took us on a journey back in time. We were all very moved and had a better understanding of what happened in Birmingham. If you want to learn and get a feel of what took place, take a tour with Clay and he will share with you his knowledge. Visiting from Minnesota!

Since most museums are not open on Monday, we decided to take this Tour to get an overview of the area and to help us decide what sites to visit. We are so glad we did; Clay, the owner, was fantastic. He gave his honest opinion of Birmingham and did not sugar coat anything. He was extremely knowledgeable about Civil Rights History and was not afraid to admit when he did not know an answer to a question. It is obvious he is respected by the community of the places we visited; even when he was accosted by a homeless individual another one came to his aid. We took Red Clay's Fight for Rights Tour as part of a Civil Rights trip last month. This tour is a must for anyone visiting Birmingham. Clay provided a brutally honest picture of life in Birmingham, both past and present. Clay is extremely knowledgable and presented all the history and information in an extremely engaging manner.
