Overview

On this three hour WALKING & DRIVING tour, you’ll travel around Birmingham to learn about the struggle for equal rights from the end of the Civil War up through the Civil Rights movement. Your tour will begin at the statue of Reverend Fred Shuttlesworth, the leader of the local movement Civil Rights struggle. We’ll discuss why the Civil Rights movement was needed and what led to segregation's fall. As you visit the major churches, parks and houses, you'll learn about a few groups who fought for Civil Rights in Birmingham and who fought against it.

We will walk over a mile on the tour in temperatures anywhere between 40-100F. Guests must be able to walk unassisted at a reasonable speed.

This was a great tour of Birmingham. Clay was exceptionally educated and knowledgeable about the history of Birmingham. He was able to take us to the historical parts of downtown Birmingham as well as other areas throughout Birmingham and explain its history. He was also able to answer questions and inform us on things about Birmingham's history that I didn't know. I definitely believed I got my money's worth and he was great!!! This is a must see and do!!

We were unable to sign-up any of the scheduled tour times because we had a very tight schedule. Clay agreed to meet us for a very early morning tour. Clay's insight into the history of Birmingham and the personalities of the people involved in the movement brought to life the struggle for Civil Rights. In the days leading up to the tour we had walked past several sites without realizing their significance. Thanks to Clay, we will look at the Confederate Memorial and the Foot Soldier statute with a different perspective....

This was a fantastic tour of Birmingham civil rights history with a fantastic guide. Cory transported us to several locations, recounting the historic events as we stood where they occurred. It was an engaging way to learn so much history in just three hours. Cory possesses a wealth of knowledge of the area and its history, and is very personable.
