Overview

On this three hour WALKING & DRIVING tour, you’ll travel around Birmingham to learn about the struggle for equal rights from the end of the Civil War up through the Civil Rights movement. Your tour will begin at the statue of Reverend Fred Shuttlesworth, the leader of the local movement Civil Rights struggle. We’ll discuss why the Civil Rights movement was needed and what led to segregation's fall. As you visit the major churches, parks and houses, you'll learn about a few groups who fought for Civil Rights in Birmingham and who fought against it.

We will walk over a mile on the tour in temperatures anywhere between 40-100F. Guests must be able to walk unassisted at a reasonable speed.

Really great tour from Mike (father of the owner). Very informative, comprehensive, authentic and educational. I had no idea what had happened in Birmingham but now have a great understanding. Very highly recommended. Not the most uplifting story you'll hear on vacation but probably the most interesting. Highly recommended

The guide was superb. He highlighted the history of race relations in Birmingham and the principal people in the conflict between the races. It is a tragic story with heroes among those pursuing a better life for Black people and bad people on the city and state level in Alabama during the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s. My wife and I learned a lot even though we closely followed the news of the civil rights struggle in the south at the time. I strongly recommend the tour especially for young people of all races. There is much to learn from Birmingham's history.

Interesting and very educational experience recounting the history of civil rights in Birmingham. There was no sugar coating of the difficulties that the city has had and continues to have with civil rights.
