Overview

On this three hour WALKING & DRIVING tour, you’ll travel around Birmingham to learn about the struggle for equal rights from the end of the Civil War up through the Civil Rights movement. Your tour will begin at the statue of Reverend Fred Shuttlesworth, the leader of the local movement Civil Rights struggle. We’ll discuss why the Civil Rights movement was needed and what led to segregation's fall. As you visit the major churches, parks and houses, you'll learn about a few groups who fought for Civil Rights in Birmingham and who fought against it.

We will walk over a mile on the tour in temperatures anywhere between 40-100F. Guests must be able to walk unassisted at a reasonable speed.

My fiancé and I drove from Oxford, Mississippi to enjoy this tour. As two African American people, we thoroughly enjoyed how knowledgable our tour guide Mike was, how he took the time to answer questions, and know he told the real history of civil rights in Birmingham without using flowery language. I learned a lot during the tour and I was surprised by many of our steps. I recommend this tour to anyone and everyone. This is hands down one of the best tours I have ever taken.

This was probably the best tour I have ever taken in the US. Birmingham is a large city rich in important history, and Mike’s tremendous effort to provide a comprehensive picture of its troubled civil rights past was great. Especially impressive were Mike’s cross-racial insights. He drove us to places across Birmingham that the average tourist would not know or think about, and he shared personal memories of living through turbulent times. I couldn’t recommend Red Clay tours more highly.

Mike did a wonderful job of giving an overview of Birmingham history since 1865 - and how all those things shaped what happened in 1963. He was informative, passionate, interesting, and helpful. Well worth the money!
