Box Canyon ATV Tour in Florence, Arizona

Overview
The Phoenix Tucson Box Canyon Tour happens in Florence, Arizona, about halfway between Tucson  and Phoenix on State Route 79. Driving time from either city is approximately 1.5 hours depending on your location.

Our trail is about 34 miles in length and about 3.25 hours in duration. Elevation gain and descent is over 1500 vertical feet as we climb up and over the front range of the Pinal Mountains.
Along the tour your guide will point out Indian petroglyphs left over from the ancient Native Americans. Another point of interest is an old adobe building that served as a way station for the Butterfield Overland Stage Coach Company during the 1860’s Express on what was know as the “Butterfield The real highlight of the tour is Box Canyon.
The middle 3 miles is slot canyon with walls that are about 1500 feet high on both sides and only about 15-20 feet apart in some places. The scenery is incredible!

We did the ATV tour in Florence through Box Canyon. The check-in process was a little unorganized and the helmets, goggles and other gear need to be cleaned or replaced. After a quick overview and loop around a training course you head on for three hours of riding. My family had an incredible experience and the scenery was incredible. Besides the poor gear, my only complaint was no restroom facilities, not even a porta-potty.

I'll start by saying I would do this or a similar trip again...the equipment worked well, the company was responsive to my questions before booking and my problems afterwards. However, our tour guide Ray RUINED the trip...read on! We showed up a little late as we got behind several school buses between Interstate 10 and Florence, but were geared up and rolling by 8:20 am. Ray was quiet but likable. My wife and I doubled up (my wife was more interested in taking pics than riding, as we have quads at home) and my sons (ages 21 and 24) rode solo. We were the only people on this trip... We set off at a slow pace and stopped at a random spot (gravel road, by RR tracks and a diversion dam) about 5 miles into the trip. Odd, but maybe Ray was giving us a chance to ask a question about the quads or get readjusted before we headed into Box Canyon. No worries... Box Canyon WAS spectacular...the light was incredible, the contrast of rock and sky and the cacti were beautiful. Ray did not point out anything until we got to the Pony Express station where he shared a few stories but mostly kept to himself. We then geared up again and...headed back to our car? Without seeing the petroglyphs!? What the $#@!? One of the expected highlights of our trip was the petroglyphs promised in the tour description. All the way back, my wife kept asking what was going on. I thought perhaps the petroglyphs were in one of the side canyons we passed on our way in. Not a chance...we hit the end of the canyon and then Ray booked it back to the cars at twice the speed we drove there. We did not stop until we got to our vehicles at 11:05 am. I asked Ray why we skipped the petroglyphs. He looked uncomfortable and said we ran out of time. I pointed out we were out less than 3 hr and our tour ran from 8-12. He then said he did not want to damage the quad my wife and I rode. When I voiced disbelief that a Grizzly 350 would be damaged given the pace and easy terrain (we weigh 350 total). Ray said that petroglyphs are not part of every tour. I tipped him 2.5%, then Ray rode off while I called the ATV company. The owner didn't know why our trip was cut short and gave us a 20% refund. Nice gesture, but no substitute for petroglyphs. An excursion with potential, but ask who your guide is and avoid Ray at all costs. He added little to the trip and was more interested in an extended lunch than our experience. Maybe Ray is better with large groups-he was disengaged and pathetic with us:(

A lot of fun enjoyed every moment! The tour guide was great first-time driver on ATV and this was perfect!
