Salem is one of the oldest cities in America and it has witnessed some of this country's devastating lows and magnificent highs. From the simple, rustic forms of frontier survival when their world was held together by religion and superstition, to the grand and imposing mansions typical of when Salem was wealthiest city in early America; all of this is captured in amazingly well-preserved detail that you can see today.

You'll be led by an experienced Architectural Historian and Preservationist as we uncover the secrets to the elusive character of this ancient, storied city using the buildings that have seen it all.

Wonderful walking tour hosted by a very enthusiastic and knowledgeable guide! Vijay is passionate about Salem history. He begins the tour at the Daniel's House, an example of expanded first period (early 17th century) architecture. We continued on foot, looking at the facades of several homes in the maritime district, moving through the Georgian and Federalist periods and beyond. Questions and comments are welcome, and our host seems to have an endless font of knowledge about history, preservation, and architectural detail and social influence. I am a resident of this town walking in a neighborhood that I know rather well, yet I went home with an enhanced appreciation of what is right around me. Well worth it indeed!
