What To Expect
1
California Academy of Sciences
The California Academy of Sciences is a must-see San Francisco museum. Based in beautiful Golden Gate Park, it’s the only place on Earth to house an aquarium, planetarium, rainforest, and natural history museum—all under one living roof. From the splashing penguins in African Hall to the wildflowers on the roof, the building is bursting with life. A four-story living rainforest and awe-inspiring coral reef ecosystem showcase Earth’s biodiversity, while immersive planetarium shows offer a new perspective on the planet we call home.
2
Steinhart Aquarium
Steinhart Aquarium is one of the most biologically diverse and interactive aquariums on Earth. Home to nearly 40,000 live animals, representing more than 900 unique species, it offers guests an unprecedented view of underwater and terrestrial habitats. From species displayed nowhere else in the world to exhibits about cutting-edge research in little-known ocean ecosystems, a visit to Steinhart Aquarium is full of discovery.
3
Morrison Planetarium
Morrison Planetarium shows are fueled by cutting-edge scientific data, resulting in stunning visualizations of the latest findings, discoveries, and theories about our Universe. Every star or galaxy a viewer encounters in the planetarium precisely mirrors a real-world counterpart, and when this virtual cosmos is projected onto Morrison's 75-foot-diameter screen, the dome itself seems to disappear, resulting in a uniquely immersive experience. Planetarium showpasses are included in the price of admission and can be reserved at the planetarium pass pick-up desk across from the planetarium entrance.

We went here using our Go City Explorer Pass. This was the only attraction we visited that asked for proof of COVID vaccination, which we thankfully had. This is a nice "combination" center that includes an aquarium, planetarium, rainforest and natural history museum. Each of the individual exhibits are good, but not as good as a stand-alone aquarium, planetarium or natural history museum. So it's a nice place to go see a little bit of everything in once place. Due to timing, we only had about 1.5 h hours to visit, which is much too short. I would say 2.5 hours would be a good amount of time to see everything. We had visited the Exploratorium and Monterey Bay Aquarium earlier in our trip, so it made our visit to the California Academy of Sciences a bit underwhelming. I think if we went the Academy first, we would have enjoyed it more.

An absolutely amazing experience. We decided to visit the museum on our family vacation to SF, and it exceeded our expectations. The aquarium exhibits were phenomenal, and the number of different species was impressive. The swamp/rainforest display was also excellent. Honestly, I have nothing bad to say about this place. We spend 3.5 hours there and wished we had come earlier in the day. We watched shows in the planetarium, checked out the history museum and interactive natural science library. It was all amazing. I would highly recommend this for any family visiting the SF area. The museum has so much to see and do for every age group. My family and I will definitely be back.
