Carmel-by-the-Sea's Fairytale Houses: A Self-Guided Walking Tour

Overview
Are you looking for a way to see Carmel’s famous Comstock Cottages without joining a tour group? Explore at your own pace with this affordable audio tour.

• See 11 fairytale cottages, and find out about architect Hugh Comstock, who married a dollmaker here in the 1920s
• Hear from producer Lynn Momboisse who co-authored a book about Carmel's historic homes
• Do it all in 40 minutes or linger at stops along the way with complete control over when you start and finish
• Get unlimited use before your booking date and after it
• Use the virtual tour option at home

Once you’ve booked, you’ll receive a ticket with instructions and a unique code listed under “Before You Go”. Then simply install the VoiceMap app and enter your code.

The app displays directions to the starting point, and when you’re in the right place, just pop in your headphones and tap start. VoiceMap has automatic GPS playback, with turn-by-turn directions. It also works offline.

Please note that this is a hilly walk.

Wonderful little walk through the neighborhood to see these enchanting little homes! I loved it!! I enjoyed hearing the history and making of the homes.

I’m still not even sure what I paid for. I could’ve just downloaded the audio from the app. I basically just have you $40 for no reason.

Hi John – This isn't a scam, I promise, and it's unclear to me how you got this impression. I'm the founder of VoiceMap, the app, and Tripadvisor is just one of our sales channels. You need to pay for tours in the app, just like you do here, and buying through Tripadvisor and the app is much the same. (Admittedly there are some extra steps if you buy tours through Tripadvisor.) The voucher codes you received after your purchase can still be used, if you haven't redeemed them already, so your purchase is still valid. You can reach me at [email protected] if you have any questions.

By not charging people, all you need is to download the app and just pay for the audio. You do not need to pay through tripadvisor. Also you don’t really have a set starting point! You can barely see the houses because they’re in people properties

I'm sorry you wouldn't recommend the tour Joana. It's true that the houses are people's homes, and you have to view them without going onto private property, but this has always been the case and they're still an iconic part of Carmel's landscape. It's also true that you can buy the tour through the app, and you're welcome to do this, but you don't get a discount or any other advantage. But it isn't true to say there isn't a set starting point. The tour follows a route and it's important to use it this way for automatic GPS playback to work correctly. The starting point is The Getaway Hotel sign at the northeast corner of Junipero and Ocean Avenue. It doesn't seem like your experience was typical. The tour has an average rating of 4.5/5 from 78 ratings on VoiceMap. If you have feedback that we can act on that would have improved things for you, please let us know. You can email me using [email protected].
