We did two private tours: a full day Burr Trail/Waterpocket Fold tour with Jason (owner) and Elizabeth, and then a half day in Cathedral Valley with Jason (with a day in between the two tours). They were both great experiences and highly recommended to see parts of Capitol Reef NP that are hard to access (we had been to the Fruita area before, so it was nice to see the other parts of the park...each of the three areas offer something unique). Furthermore, the benefit of a guide's expertise maximized our time and enhanced our experience beyond anything I could have planned on my own. They were both great hosts and guides, easy to talk with both casually and intelligently, happy to share their knowledge of this place they love, and answer lots of questions from curious minds (kids and adults). They also tailored the tours based on our interests (which is a highlight of a private family tour).
Highlights of the Waterpocket Fold trail were the Strike Valley overlook (I could spend hours sitting there), petroglyphs, and dinosaur bones. The drive back through Boulder Mountain was also very pretty and a nice way to end the drive. We thoroughly enjoyed this tour and our guides' company and expertise! It is worth repeating and my favorite of the two tours.
Highlights of the Cathedral Valley tour were playing in the Bentonite Hills, a rare elk herd sighting, and viewing the Temples of the Sun and Moon, as well as the fascinating Glass Mountain.
Having a guide like Jason not only gives you a break from the drive and access to a vehicle and driver capable of the rough backcountry terrain, which can get you into trouble depending on experience and weather, but also gives you experiences and insights that just don't happen from reading signs or doing your own research. I think a half day was enough to hit the highlights of Cathedral Valley, but we did miss plenty and a full day would have been better if in the money/time budget. If I had to pick one though and money/time wasn't a consideration, the full day waterpocket fold tour wins easily in my mind.
