Central Park Zoo
The zoo is open every day of the year and features three major biomes: the Tropic Zone, Temperate Territory, and the Polar Circle. From tropical birds, to snow leopards, grizzly bears, and one of the nation’s largest colonies of Antarctic penguins, there are animals to enjoy in every season. We also feature the Tisch Children’s Zoo, a playful adventure for our youngest guests who’ll encounter goats, sheep, some of the world’s most unique ducks, and the only cow who calls Manhattan home. Our goal is to inspire our visitors and connect them to the plight of animals in the wild and the conservation work we’re doing to protect them.

This was our first and last visit to the Central Park Zoo. As we approached the zoo we passed the horse drawn carriages in Central Park and I told my kids how horrific it is the way the horses are out to work in terrible conditions. Videos posted of horses collapsing from dehydration and exhaustion while people and traffic go by. The irony was that I was about to pay admission some something just as bad. When we arrived in the zoo the first thing you encounter is the sea lion pool. It was obvious they were struggling to swim in circles in this tiny enclosure. They were bumping into each other as they tried to burn off energy and swim the circumference of the plexi glass pool. Off to the grizzly bear enclosure. One bear just kept pacing and was pounding on the glass. The bear was in distress. The bat display had a space the size of a small bedroom with hundreds of bats. Again, they were flying frantically with stress and very little space to take flight. We left within an hour. The only thing I can do to clear my conscience of supporting this outing is to donate to an animal sanctuary that rescues animals from places like this. This business is no better than the humans exploiting the horses around Central Park.

Upsetting experience. Over cramped, dirty and tiny enclosures. Animals trying to eat litter that had been thrown into their enclosures. Where were the staff to police this? People banging on the glass. Again, where were the staff? My hotel room was bigger than the enclosures that these animals were existing in. Red pandas, an endangered species, pacing the pen out of sheer boredom. The information signs had the AUDACITY to state that ā€œlemurs need healthy rainforestsā€ yet they’re sat motionless on a couple of dead logs and some shrubs on the floor. Thirty plus penguins in a tiny indoor enclosure with no outdoor space and no natural light. THE GIFT SHOP WAS THREE TIMES THE SIZE OF THE SEA LION ENCLOSURE. An animal which can swim miles in one night. Depressing and disgusting. If you are animal lover this is not the place for you.

Not much to look at. Penguins, seals, birds, lemurs. That’s it. Not worth the price of tickets. Kids were bored after 20 mins.
