We booked online for the combo Fort Sumpter and City tour. Seeing a heat wave was going to be in full force we booked for first thing in the morning. Our plan was to do Sumpter first in the cooler part of the day then on to the air conditioned bus . One person in our party has health problems. We called twice prior to our visit to ensure that we could take the Fort Sumpter Tour first and follow up with the bus tour. We were reassured we could do this and instructed to show up before the tour and get our Ft Sumpter vouchers. We arrived early at 8:30 am for the 9:30 boat to be told ā€œNo it’s too much trouble to change we had to take the bus tour firstā€. The bus tour was a bust. Quoting our guideā€Here’s a church on your right and here’s a church next to it.ā€,the gothic church has those ā€œ pointy things on topā€ Oh and if you want to do some shopping my friend has a shopā€. I could not wait for it to be over, neither could our guest. Fort Sumpter: The best part was the air conditioning in the museum, had it not been for that, I probably would have passed out. The Museum was nice with lots of information. The buildings outside are painted black attracting the heat , so I didn’t get to see most of the historic displays. We tried to be proactive with our arrangements, we didn’t ask for anything special. The booking people seem to be at different odds with procedure and lack communication skills with clients and apparently each other.

We like to do a city tour when we visit a new place and this turned out to be an excellent one. It is a fairly small bus, air conditioned and comfortable. It moved throughout downtown Charleston with one stop to get out and stretch your legs. There are no bathroom breaks. Also you can't get good photos through the windows but you'll learn where you want to return to on foot. Like most tours the quality depends on the tour guide you get. There are several and we had read about one you don't want to get but we lucked out with Roy. He was a history major at College of Charleston 25 years ago and was the best tour guide we have ever had. Very professional, well-spoken, and extremely knowledgeable about "his" city. If you could ask about getting him, it would be worth the wait.
