Carriage can transport up to 16 passengers per departure.
Children 3 years and under are free provided that they sit on the lap of a parent or guardian. If you want your child to have a seat, you must purchase a child seat.

Public carriage tours are seated up to 100% capacity, full capacity consists of up to 16 passengers with 4 guests seated per row.

What To Expect

Old South Carriage Company

Our stable is where your tour experience will begin and end. After checking in you can say hi to our draft horses, watch an educational video, purchases a bottle of water, or use our restroom. As you board your carriage via our inclined ramp / easy loading platform, your certified tour guide will greet you.

Charleston City Market

After leaving our stable, your carriage will stop at the City gate near the Market, where a route is assigned by the City of Charleston. Our industry is governed by this system in order to disperse the carriage traffic more evenly throughout the city. Your tour will cover about 30 blocks and 300+ years of history. Though specific landmarks vary by route, all tours pass by sights that give Charleston its unique charm – custom wrought iron gates, well-manicured gardens, historic mansions with picturesque piazzas, and the many church steeples of the “Holy City.”

The horses are lovely and it’s nice to see more of Charleston. Our tour guide was knowledgeable, but spoke way too fast. We got a few pitches for local businesses he liked and the highlight was the sales pitch on how the history books are unfair to the south because it was not worse than the north in terms of slavery. Kind of like, “they did it too and we did these other good things but we get blamed.” It was mildly offensive. I don’t know if the narrative would be different with a different driver. And the route the carriage takes is a lottery, so you won’t know where it’s going until you are on the carriage. To be fair, there was quite a bit of interesting history shared as well, and it was a relaxing and comfortable ride.

Excellent tour with a lot of the history and information of the buildings, churches and houses of Old Charleston. Our Tour Guide, Nice Don, was very informative and definitely knew his stuff on Charleston. Would recommend this tour to anyone in the Charleston area.
