What To Expect
1
Chicago Public Library - Hall Branch
It was named for the city’s first African American Mayor, who served from 1983-87 and opened in 1991. Chicago’s known for having some of the finest architecture in the world.
2
Financial District
centered on LaSalle Street in the Loop, is the fulcrum of the heartland’s economic engines. Looming skyscrapers form a canyon-like effect down LaSalle, which ends abruptly with the Art Deco masterpiece of the Board of Trade on Jackson. Floridly-dressed commodity traders at the Board of Trade, regulators at the Chicago Fed, and bankers of all pinstripes know this power corridor very well.
3
Calder’s Flamingo
53-foot tall stabile located in the Federal Plaza in front of the Kluczynski Federal Building. It was commissioned by the United States General Services Administration and was unveiled in 1974, although Calder's signature on the sculpture indicates it was constructed in 1973.
4
The Rookery Building
The Rookery building in the heart of Chicago’s financial district stands testimony to the resilience and creative spirit of late-nineteenth century Chicago. The rebirth of the city in the wake of the Great Fire of 1871 gave rise to the multi-storied office building that would transform the landscape of America’s cities.
5
Palmer House Hilton Historic Lobby
The story of downtown Chicago’s Palmer House Hilton is one of romance and undeniable charm. Potter Palmer was a Chicago business magnate—well-known for a variety of endeavors, including his significant role in the development of downtown Chicago’s iconic State Street.

This was an excellent overview of the types of food Chicago is known for. Our tour guide, Carrie, was very knowledgeable of all aspects of the experience- the history of the food (ex the multiple immigrant groups who contributed ingredients), how the food is cooked and why, as well as the local restaurant context. The tour follows a unique strategy of introducing simple to increasingly more complex cuisine, which often parallels the underlying immigrant experience. The restaurants chosen are of course top notch, and are very happy to accomodate the tour. After the tour is over, you get an incredible bonus- free admission to the Art Insitute, ranked as one of the best museums in the world for several years running. Highly recommended!

The tour began with quintessentially Chicagoan deep dish pizza. Seated at the pizza restaurant, we all got to know each other and the host, Carrie. It was a great group of mixed ages and nationalities, and Carrie was enthusiastic about our adventure. From there we experienced a variety of classics including beef sandwiches and Chicago's infamous hot dogs, while receiving fascinating historical information from Carrie. The tour culminated in stylish fashion with food and drink on the rooftop of a beautiful art museum in downtown, near the landmark Bean sculpture. A thoroughly enjoyable, and extremely delicious, experience! Would recommend to all friends and family visiting Chicago, and even to locals wanting to learn more about the city and find new food spots.
