What To Expect

Haines

Visit a true naturalist’s paradise - Haines, Alaska. Haines boasts some of the most pristine wild country in Southeast Alaska. Your expert naturalist guide will share their knowledge of this area’s unique wildlife, plants, and ecosystems.

Chilkoot River

In May, June and July, the wildflowers are at their peak and eagles are busy caring for their young on the nest. Beginning in late July, the river fills with migrating salmon, while brown bears come down to the river’s edge to feed. As the number of salmon in the river increases, the likelihood of seeing bears down along the river increases, with a good probability of bear sightings from early August through late September.

Chilkoot Lake State Recreation Area

As you drive through the park, your guide knows the best places to stop for scenery and the possibility of wildlife spotting. Your guide is equipped with a powerful spotting scope to bring the wildlife in close, and your guide will help interpret the behavior of the various wildlife and explain how the animals fit into the Chilkoot’s complex ecosystem. Make sure you bring your camera to take advantage of the numerous photo opportunities.

Fort William H. Seward National Historic Landmark

Fort William H Seward overlooks the Port Chilkoot Cruise Ship Dock. Built by the US Army in 1904, the fort has a storied past and is now privately owned and maintained featuring a number of outdoor art installations, restaurants and shops. Pass through on your way back to your ship.

Chad was a great and knowledgeable guide. We had a small group which got along well. We did not see bears but saw a mama moose with two babies, lots of eagles, a harbor seal and numerous other birds. Great time.

I am so glad to read about the time you had with Chad. He is a very knowledgeable guide with a master's degree in fisheries biology. I am glad that you were open-minded and not fixated on seeing a bear. When one is open-minded, there is lots of enjoy about a visit to Haines. And how special that you got to see a moose! Moose are much less predictable than bear because they love to willows, and willows are found throughout the valley. Bear prefer salmon, and salmon concentrate in the Chilkoot River in August and September, so the Chilkoot tends to be a reliable place to see them that time of the summer. But every trip is different. These are wild animals and that what makes it so thrilling to see one, whatever the species!

Thanks so much for this great review. I like that you mentioned that our guide was well-prepared. We go out of our way to make sure that the vehicle is clean, our spotting scope and binoculars are in top shape, and that we plan out a route for the day that takes into account the weather, the group and the movement of the wildlife. We make lots of stops because its important to get out of the vehicle and breathe in the clean, fresh Alaskan air. Also, some of the wildlife make amazing sounds and you can't hear them when you are driving around.

We disembarked from our cruise ship and Katherine greeted our group of 9 multi-generational wildlife enthusiasts. Her commentary was clear, easy to follow and she imparted valuable info for 2.5 hours. Our small bus held us all comfortably and Katherine was a very good driver. We saw eagles, salmon but sadly no bears. Maybe next time.

Thanks for this great review. I appreciate that you mention that the weather was "sunny" but of course, we take no credit for it. Hot, sunny days are usually not the best days to find bear. They tend to stay in the shade until the temperatures cool down. I like that you mention how Katherine was able to make the tour interesting for your multi-generational group. We offer the 2.5 hour tour when larger ships dock in Haines. When there is no big ship in Haines, the tour is 4 hours. And we also offer a 6.5 hour version from Skagway that includes round-trip transport and four hours in Haines.
