Chilkoot Wilderness and Wildlife Viewing - Skagway Departure

Overview
Leave the crowds of Skagway behind and visit Chilkoot Lake State Park in Haines.

Your tour begins with a high-speed catamaran ride along the steep-walled fjords which connect Skagway to Haines. Over a dozen unnamed waterfalls drop hundreds of feet from both sides of the boat. Upon arrival in Haines, you will meet your expert naturalist guide for a drive to Chilkoot Lake State Park.

This park has it all: a turquoise lake surrounded by snowy mountain peaks, a salmon-filled river flowing into the sea, and important Tlingit cultural sights. Bald eagles, harbor seals, and brown bears are often seen here.

What To Expect
1
Haines
Visit a true naturalistā€™s paradise - Haines, Alaska. Haines boasts some of the most pristine wild country in Southeast Alaska. Your expert naturalist guide will share their knowledge of this areaā€™s unique wildlife, plants, and ecosystems.
2
Chilkoot River
In May, June and July, the wildflowers are at their peak and eagles are busy caring for their young on the nest. Beginning in late July, the river fills with migrating salmon, while brown bears come down to the riverā€™s edge to feed. As the number of salmon in the river increases, the likelihood of seeing bears down along the river increases, with a good probability of bear sightings from early August through late September.
3
Chilkoot Lake State Recreation Area
As you drive through the park, your guide knows the best places to stop for scenery and the possibility of wildlife spotting. Your guide is equipped with a powerful spotting scope to bring the wildlife in close, and your guide will help interpret the behavior of the various wildlife and explain how the animals fit into the Chilkootā€™s complex ecosystem. Make sure you bring your camera to take advantage of the numerous photo opportunities.
4
Fort William H. Seward National Historic Landmark
Fort William H Seward overlooks the Port Chilkoot Cruise Ship Dock. Built by the US Army in 1904, the fort has a storied past and is now privately owned and maintained.

I am so sorry you did not like the "bumpy" ride. The Chilkoot Road has been recently paved and so the only bumps on the road are speed bumps! All our Rainbow Glacier Adventure vehicles are well-maintained. Our largest vehicle holds a maximum of 14 guests, so you can be assured of a personalized experience. We do not control the wildlife but do our best to provide exceptional service and quality information about the area.

They over booked the tour and cancelled us last minute! we booked this about 5 weeks in advance. the following is the email we received the morning of our excursion: "I have unfortunate news. The Haines Skagway Fast Ferry has been oversold so we have had to cancel all guests for tomorrow that did not book through their ship." When we booked this excursion we told them what cruise ship we were coming in on with the dates and time that we port. we received that email as we were packing that morning for the excursion. It's pretty sad that they would cancel anyone knowing we were on a cruise and would not have a chance to rebook. Manager called us around 9:00 (2 hours before the excursion) to offer us a different excursion that we were not interested in. My guess is they didn't want to refund us and was trying to get us to do an any excursion that no one else wanted!

I am so sorry that we had to cancel you on this tour. Our tours from Skagway involve a Fast Ferry ride. The Fast Ferry is owned and run by a different company. They do an excellent job of providing this service for us. Unfortunately, like the airlines, they sometimes overbook. This rarely happens and we do not hesitate to give a full refund if this happens. In the interest of customer service, we will offer an alternative tour in Skagway with one of our tours that do not require the Fast Ferry. That is what we did in your case. Since you were not interested, you received a full refund.
