Overview

Join the Brewing Heritage Trail on this mostly indoor tour to learn about modern and historic brewing and distilling, but that’s not all, we’ll get to sample beverages and visit a 19th century underground lagering cellar along the way! The first stop on the tour is Northern Row Brewery and Distillery, where we’ll get a close-up look at their distilling process, followed by a spirit sampling. Next stop are the lagering cellars of the historic Jackson Brewery, where beer was fermented and cold stored dating back to the 1850s! We then head to the Rhinegeist Brewery, located inside a pre-Prohibition brewing structure, where we’ll take a behind the scenes tour of their modern and historic facility (stairs are required for part of the tour), concluding with a flight of their seasonal beverages. No other tour in the city offers historic and modern brewing and distilling, with an underground cellar exploration, so don’t miss out on this unique tour offered only by the Brewing Heritage Trail!

What To Expect

Northern Row

We learn about the history of the pre-Prohibition fermentation house where the brewery & distillery is located, followed by a behind the scenes tour of their distilling operations. The tour then concludes with a spirit tasting in their taproom.

Rhinegeist Brewery

Guests will take a behind the scenes tour, where we learn how the Rhinegeist Brewery produces their beer, along with some history of the pre-Prohibition structure that houses their operations and taproom. We conclude this portion of the tour with a flight of their winter beers.

I think with a different tour guide, this would have been a more enjoyable experience. Our guide was very knowledgeable about the history of Cincinnati, but because of that, would digress to stories regarding other breweries or historical figures or locations that did not relate to the specific locations on tour, and would often repeat things or talk in circles. Perhaps for someone native.to the city, this would have been more interesting The tour went over a full 40 minutes, so by the time we made it to Rhinegeist, I felt very rushed for time. I didn't want to ask any questions I actually had about the brewery because I feared a long winded answer and more time hold up. I would recommend the guides implement a stricter tour script. The flight sampling at Northern Row included 3 spirits, but not much information regarding flavors or how they are made, which I was intrigued to hear. The flight at Rhinegeist had very little introduction or information regarding the 4 sample beers, and it was very loud in the brewery sitting are, without any sort of reserved room for tasting, so it was disappointing. You're better off visiting on your own, booking a tour directly with rhinegeist when you arrive, and picking your own flight afterward

great tour of historical buildings and learning about the brewing and distilling processes. Going down in the underground tunnels was really cool. We had a fun group, great conversation. The beer is good. The spirits are great. it was a thoroughly enjoyable day.
