Our Private Circle Island 9 hour tour of the area was very good. Our driver/guide was Tiho, and he was very knowledgeable about all the areas we saw. Always offering to take pictures and was very good with the camera - even taking pano pics on my camera!
We went to the Byodo-In Temple, which was beautiful. He bought food and had us feeding the birds from our hands and also the fish, who came up with their mouths open waiting for food. We stopped along the route for beautiful scenic photos, also at Macadamia nut farm for tasting, Kualoa Regional Park, which was gorgeous and not busy, stopped in front of the mountain range from Jurassic Park and took photos and then to the Dole Plantation where we had Dole Whip.... delicious.
We had stopped for lunch in a place of his choice. That was disappointing, as we usually are given a choice of where to eat on our private tours. Unfortunately, it was all fried food, and really not that good. For the non-fish eaters like me, there was a chicken option. But is was just like chicken strips and rice (all dishes came with rice).
As we were driving to the Dole Plantation, things got strange. He proceeded to chat about tipping, which I understand is important to talk about as not everyone considers tipping. What was strange was the length of the talk about tipping and the details he provided were un-necessary. I pointed out that the pandemic happened world wide and may people's incomes and lives were effected. He even told us how much to tip, 30% since he was the driver and the guide. He even told us if we didn't have enough cash that there was a bank machine at the next stop. This left everyone very disappointed and angry. We've had private excursions all over the world, and this was the first time we encountered this. At the end of the tour, many of us did decide to tip (some had decided not to tip based on his tipping lecture). However, our tip was lower than what we usually would tip. One of our group members did have a private discussion with him when the tour was completed and told him that we were not happy with our long tipping lecture and he would have received much more money if he just lightly mentioned tipping would be appreciated.
While the tour itself was fantastic and he was a fantastic tour guide, the end was still disappointing. I hope Tiho, that you leave out the lengthy lecture on tipping as you are a fantastic tour guide.
Don't let this stop you from booking this tour, if Tiho is your guide, you will get a great tour.
