We took the Outside Hilton Head History & Artists tour of Daufuskie Island & are really glad we went with Outside Hilton Head. They use smaller boats (we only had 4 couple in our group) & leave from Shelter Cove Marina. Our captain & guide was Pete Barbano. Captain Pete really knew about the history of Hilton Head Island, Daufuskie Island and the Gullah people. It took over an hour to get to Daufuskie, because Captain Pete took us around the island telling about the history and Gullah people & traditions. After we docked we caravanned in golf carts stopping at various sites to learn more about the history and traditions of the Gullah people. He also told us about current residents as well. One of thse stops was the schoolhouse where Pat Conroy taught that is now occupied by Indigo Blue and other artists. The owner of Indigo Blue explained the process they use to extract the blue Indigo dye as well as the process to dye the cloth. They have beautiful hand dyed items for sale. Behind the shop is a wonderful coffee shop. We got some delicious hot apple cider and a cinnamon crunch cookie. Since it was a cool afternoon the cider was a great way to warm up. I was really glad we did this tour instead of just taking the ferry & renting a golf cart. There is no way we would have learned as much on our own. Thanks Captain Pete for such a great tour.

We went to Daufuskie with Captain Pete. He was extremely knowledgeable and entertaining. I highly recommend him. We learned so much and saw so much because of Captain Pete. A trip to Daufuskie is well-worth the time. If you go, ask for Captain Pete as your guide. You couldnā€™t do better. John Gregory and Carol Ann Ruth
