What To Expect

Oceano Dunes State Vehicular Recreation Area

Rent your dune buggy in Oceano, just 5 minutes down the road from Pismo Beach, at your selected time. Get fitted with your gear and receive a safety orientation. You will then hop on our complimentary beach shuttle which will drive you a mile down the beach to the OHV staging area. Hop in the driver's seat or passenger's seat of your fully automatic, Big Paddle Tirer Dune Buggy and zoom off through the Oceano Dunes.

We needed to do something special for my daughter's 16th birthday on our trip to california and we could not have chosen a better experience than sun buggy, we loved pismo beach and the dune buggies, the staff where nice and very helpful, we negotiated a little more time to get to the dunes and they worked with us, we rented 2 buggies one for our family of 4 and one for my cousins family of 5,its was an experience of a lifetime we will do it again when we go back to pismo beach.Do not miss the dunes they are fun,magical and big we did not expect that it was endless and so much fun. On a special note i need to thank Randy the owner for giving us a buggy to look for my cousins camera that she dropped and later found thanks to Randy's kindness and his great staff.So thank you for a wonderful experience.

My wife and I re-visited Pismo Beach on 9/14 and had a great time at Sunbuggie. We rode the prowler up and over the sand dunes. The staff was exceptionally nice and accommodated our request without hesitation. Highly recommend Sunbuggie!

This was a very disappointing experience, especially because we were waiting for the Pismo experience all along the way of route 1. The people at the store, shared with us too much of many awful accidents that happened to small children on ATVs and because of that they made us afraid for our kid's safety and we decided we will get a buggy and not ATVs. We arrived and everything was great the people were nice and we got in our Buggies. My two older kids were in one and my husband and my 6 y were in another. We rode off happy until we reached the dunes. There we had to dig our rusty and old vehicles out of the sand repeatedly. These vehicles were weak and incapable of moving at all up the higher dunes. We turned around after 45 minutes and returned back. Afterwards we realized they acted as if they wanted us to get the Buggys. My recommendation is if your party is over 18 take ATVs or get ATVs somewhere else.

I am truly sorry that we failed to meet your expectations. With reference to the rust this is a constant issue for us as the vehicles are exposed the salt water air being directly on the beach. Because of the beach environment the vehicles are all washed daily and every other season are totally dissembled and re powder coated. So we do go to great lengths and expense to maintain the vehicles appearance but to be rust free we'd virtually have to rebuild them every week (it costs about $2000 to tear down, re-coat, and rebuild a buggy) so it's just not viable. You may have noted that we also have new 2013 vehicles on the beach which also have surface rust and are less that 90 days old and despite getting washed daily. I believe when you returned your vehicles you were offered a free upgrade to a larger more powerful vehicle intended for customers whom had previously experienced the dunes, but did not take us up on that offer. Please let me know if you are interested in a gift certificate for same for your next visit to Oceano Dunes and I will have the certificate forwarded to you. We did inspect the vehicles you drove and didn't find any mechanical problems, they have continued to rent with no issues. With reference to Adolescent ATV rentals we are contractually able to rent ATVs for adolescents but as you state currently we do not. The safety issue is that we don't feel that a few minutes of training is adequate to send children driving out on the dunes as many renters are first time riders. If you wish to allow your children to operate ATV's at the Oceano Dunes we are in the process of having several of our employees trained to be able to instruct adolescents in accordance with ASI (ATV Safety Institute) standards and should have this training available at Sun Buggie next season. The ASI course is takes approximately 4 hours to complete and provides the student with the proper state mandated ATV Operators License. If you would rather have a gift certificate to participate in same on your next visit to Oceano please advise me. We hope you'll give us another chance to meet and exceed your expectations.
