Overview

In mid-summer and early fall when the salmon arrive to spawn, Margaret Creek in Traitor’s Cove is host to a high concentration of black bears making it the perfect place for Ketchikan, Alaska bear tours. Your captain/guide is well equipped and very familiar with travel in bear country, as well as knowledgeable about local flora, fauna, and wildlife that inhabit the rainforest.

We toured with Alaska Hummer Tours on their Expedition Black Bear in mid-August. It was absolutely the HIGHLIGHT of our trip to Alaska!! We were greeted by the awesome owner John and his son (our Captain) AJ. We boarded their enclosed boat which was super comfortable and warm for our 30 minute trip to the island to see the bears. We arrived on the island and hopped in their van to take us to the bear viewing area. After a short walk down a beautiful, rain forest "looking" path- we ended up at the viewing platform. Literally within one minute we saw multiple black bears hunting for the spawning salmon as they swam upstream. The platform was awesome as it let you see really close (and of course AJ had his binoculars too since we forgot ours so it was even more close up) the bears eating the fish they caught. We counted at least 5 different black bears during our time on the platform. AJ and John shared stories about other viewings and the bears and told us some interesting facts about the black bears and their habits. It was truly a one of a kind experience! We love to travel and have been fortunate to do a lot of tours in our lifetime- this was a true highlight for sure! I would highly recommend Expedition Black Bear- 5 stars+!

This was a fantastic trip that left us with memories to last a lifetime. The boat ride was smooth and enjoyable with lots of information from the captain. Once we got to the bear platform we only had to wait a few minutes and our first bear arrived. It was very interesting seeing him fish for salmon with a bald eagle sitting nearby. Nothing more Alaskan than that. Highly recommend doing this tour. Just make sure you cover up to stop bug bites as you are sitting ducks while you watch the bears.

This was hands down our favorite thing we did in Ketchikan. Our guide Alex was local and extrely knowledgeable about the area, flora, and wildlife (he was very patient with all our questions.) It takes some time (and patience) waiting in the viewing area, but after about 35 minutes of waiting the bears started showing up. We had an up close and personal experience with the bears observing them in their natural habitat. We would highly recommend this tour to anyone who has the time.
