Fall Color Tour in the Smoky Mountains

Overview
Since 1998, our naturalist guides have taken over 100,000 people into the Smokies to experience the sea of mountains. Experience these ancient treasures up close on this once in a lifetime trip! Your tour guides may include a former Park ranger, a former Appalachian Trail Thru Hiker, or biologist and geologists.

A Walk In The Woods offers once in a lifetime guided hiking and walking tours in the Smoky Mountains, emphasizing the teaching of natural history.

On this tour, we are on a quest to find the best fall color at the time of your tour. Where we go could vary greatly depending on where the leaves are peaking at that time. The hiking can be easy to moderate.

This tour is not what we expected. We both needed to drive in our own car following the guide! 230 dollars for this was a real waste of money. You really don’t need a guide to drive to Clingman’s dome. Our guide was a young lady , was really nice. It was too late to cancel the trip.

Hi there, So sorry you were disappointed with your tour. We never like to hear that! We do state in a few places that this tour does not offer transportation. That can be frustrating when the Park is so busy. October is the Park's busiest month of the year with the leaves changing. We are a small business that can be seriously impacted by negative reviews. We would greatly appreciate folks reaching out to us before posting a negative review to see if there is something we can do to make it up to you. Unfortunately, we have no control over some things like traffic and weather, but if you reach out to us directly, we can point you in the direction of a tour that would offer less traffic or something a bit more off the beaten path. The tour you signed up for is a quest to find the best color, and, at the time of your tour, Clingman's Dome area was the best viewing area. I hope this helps to clarify a few things and we do hope to work with you in the future. Thanks, Patricia

We took this tour with Ken on October 8 & had a great time. After meeting at the Sugarlands Visitors Center we made a short drive to the trailhead & then started our walk along the Little River. Ken was extremely knowledgeable about the trail & the park so we learnt a lot. Granted we could have done the hike on our own, but we wouldn’t have known the park history at all. Well worth doing to learn how the Great Smoky Mountains became a National park.

Beautiful views! This tour was a little misleading- so here’s what you can expect: We met at the visitors center, only to follow our guide by car for an hour??? Why didn’t they have a van for everyone to ride together? Then there were 4 elderly women on our hike. This is a 2 mile down the mountain and then 2miles back up and a pretty challenging walk back up. We started at 10:00 and it was 40* very chilly. It took just under 4 hours for the hike and add 2 hours drive time. Our guide was a little new and did not have a whole lot of information to share. She provided snacks at the destination and that was nice. You could drive to Clingmans Dome and walk the trail without a guide and save $$$

Hello, Thank you for the feedback. I would love to clarify a few things though. We do specify that no transportation is provided. You must follow in your own vehicle. This is a hike focused on finding the best Fall color based on the timing of your tour. Unfortunately, early in the season, the Fall color will be up high and move down the mountain as the season progresses. The areas we visit for this tour are very variable. Guided hikes are a group activity and sometimes paces don't align perfectly. That can be frustrating. Please reach out to us in the future for information on our 'private' option. This way your whole family/group will get to hike at a pace that is enjoyable to your group. Also, if you choose to hike with us again, give us a call and we can direct you to hikes that are a bit more off the beaten path. :-) This guide consistently receives stellar reviews. I am sad to hear that they didn't meet your expectations. Lastly, booking third party can, sometimes, be a bit more expensive than booking directly through us as everyone has to get their commissions (and nothing is getting cheaper these days). I apologize you feel it was a bit too pricey, but we do really try to provide a great service while paying our guides a living wage. Thank you, Patricia
