First time in Charleston so I had to take a tour to learn more about this amazing city. I booked another architecture tour, that touched on some of the darker side of charelstons history and knew I had to be more informed. Then I found the Frankly Charleston Black History tour. By far the most important tour I have done in my life and Frank was a truly special guide. He explained the history that people rarely talk about with a lot of references and encouragement to find out more myself. Franks view was in order to bring us together we need to learn about history and that way we can move forward in creating a fair and humane society. Frank was very knowable about Charleston and the world and was friendly and super passionate about educating. If you can only do one tour in Charleston do this one.

Went over a month ago and this walking tour remains the most memorable part of our visit. Charleston is impressive with many beautiful homes, great restaurants and guides to tell you about it. However, how was so much wealth generated? This walking tour provides insight and physical evidence on how this happened and how freed slaves were constantly reminded that they were being governed by former slave owners. This tour is an effective means by which to also understand how South Carolina institutionalized these roles into the 20th Century. We took this tour to gain a different perspective and took away some very powerful and lasting insights

We've been coming to Charleston for many years and taken many walking tours, but this one stands out for offering a view of what Franklin Williams, your tour guide, calls "the other Charleston." Beyond the mansions south of Broad Street and the gardens and the churches is the overlooked history of African Americans in the city. Many tours touch only lightly if at all on this history in an effort not to offend. Franklin tackles it head on and without apology but with good humor and deep knowledge. Highly recommended!
