From Reno Arch to Truckee River: A Self-Guided Audio Tour

Overview
Weave through the different periods of Reno's boom and bust on this self-guided audio tour of the downtown area.

Reno, with its highs as a glitzy desert town filled with cowboys and celebrities, to its lows as a washed-up gambling town and the butt of many jokes on late night TV, has never failed to keep America fascinated. It’s a contradictory place that rides high and dips low. And, as it turns out, that oscillation was built into the city’s character from the beginning.

This walking tour starts at Reno’s Arch, and along the way you'll find out about:

A beloved 12-floor brick building that was demolished.
An extinct species of huge fish that used to swim through downtown Reno.
Reno’s history as the divorce capital of America.
How trains, highways and mining changed the city.
The bridge where the whole town started.

This self-guided audio tour can be enjoyed on location or even virtually at home with VoiceMap's Continuous Play function which disables the GPS playback.

We were pleasantly surprised by this walking tour. The the tour was easy to follow, and the narrator was clear. I liked how I could keep my phone in my pocket and the app was able to track where I was and to let me know when and where to turn. Great way to get a walk and learn a little about Reno’s history.

This self-guided tour was interesting but towards the middle to the end, it starting leading directions that were incorrect or the visual map would lag and would tell you that you were off-track, but would then would refresh and would tell you that you needed to turn around and go right back to where you came. I went across 1 intersection and down one road twice before it ever refreshed. The information was interesting but it became more frustrating than interesting.

Hi Beverly, thank you for responding to my email for more information on what exactly went wrong. It seems like you didn't use the start button correctly, and started the tour using the Resume function, instead of Start Tour. The resume function allows you to resume the tour from any location and is useful if you are taking a break during the tour and want to pick up where you left off. To start the tour at the beginning, The grey Start Tour button will gradually turn red as you get closer to the start, and once you are at the starting point, will be fully red and you can then press it.

I thought this was so interesting. I didn’t know much about Reno, but this tour took us around the river and gave us historical context to what I had mistakenly thought was a boring city.
